This is interesting development.
Trump’s already declared a general “national energy emergency” on his first day, January 20, 2025, via an executive order invoking the National Emergencies Act. This unlocked over 130 statutory powers to bypass regulations, expedite fossil fuel projects, and prioritize domestic energy production explicitly excluding wind and solar from the definition of “energy.”
Some may wonder is this electricity emergency a linchpin in Trump’s vision to cement U.S. supremacy in the 21st-century tech race, particularly against China?
Trump’s camp is alarmedit seems. The grid’s creaking blackouts hit Texas in February 2025, blamed on frozen gas lines and demand from AI and crypto mining is spiking faster than new plants can come online. A February 2025 North American Electric Reliability Corporation report warned of “high risk” shortages in 13 states by 2027. Trump fears a Biden-era legacy of intermittent renewables could tank his presidency if factories shutter or voters freeze. Worse, he’s paranoid about China flipping a switch cyberattacks on U.S. substations tripled in 2024, per FBI data, with Beijing suspected. Is this emergency his preemptive strike to harden the grid and flex muscle?
If Trump pulls this off, winners include Big Oil, red-state economies, and U.S. AI firms racing China. Losers are green tech offshore wind projects in New Jersey, already paused by a January 20 memo, could die and urban coasts facing higher power costs as rural plants get priority. Chaos looms if courts balk (environmentalists are lawyering up) or if forced nuclear builds spark protests think Three Mile Island vibes. The grid might get juiced, but at a price: dirtier air, deeper divides, and a gamble on fossil fuels as the world pivots elsewhere.
