Finally got over to see the iconic Black Angel at the Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City , an 8.5 foot oxidized bronze sculpture by Czech-American artist Mario Korbel, commissioned by Teresa Feldervert to commemorate her son Eddie, who died in 1891, and her husband Nicholas, who died in 1911. She is interred in the adjoining plot, though the date of her passing is left open-ended and unengraved on the stone, which I find strangely appealing.
There is a fair bit of urban myth and spooky, curse-oriented folklore around the Black Angel, yet I felt nothing untoward vibe-wise around the site, even though I was there on All Saints Day, or Samhain in Celtic tradition. In fact, I was greeted by a family of deer calmly munching grass on my way to the sculpture/tombstone. They looked up at me and watched, but didn’t run away, which I consider a good sign.
I’m currently reading Victor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, about his and others experiences in the concentration camps, and a passage I’d just read only moments ago struck me as an appropriate epitaph to leave with the Black Angel. Frankl believed that everything could be taken from a person but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
“This young woman knew that she would die in the next few days. But when I talked to her she was cheerful in spite of this knowledge. ‘I am grateful that fate has hit me so hard,’ she told me. ‘In my former life I was spoiled and did not take spiritual accomplishments seriously.’ Pointing through the window of the hut, she said, ‘This tree here is the only friend I have in my loneliness.’ Through the window she could see just one branch of a chestnut tree, and on the branch were two blossoms. ‘I often talk to this tree,’ she said to me. I was startled and didn’t know quite how to take her words. Was she delirious? Did she have occasional hallucinations? Anxiously, I asked her if the tree replied. ‘Yes.’ What did it say to her? She answered, ‘It said to me, I am here – I am here – I am life, eternal life.'”
