U.S. Space Force Declares Region Around the Moon a Warfighting Domain
The U.S. Space Force is now treating the area between Earth and the Moon as a warfighting domain and is weighing the launch of up to five military satellites into cislunar space by 2029.
Officials describe the vehicles as potential seed satellites that could inform a larger future constellation for reconnaissance and domain awareness on the far side of the Moon.
The shift follows public statements from senior leaders, including the Secretary of War and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, framing cislunar space as contested territory.
The move is driven by China’s documented plans for sustained lunar activity, including a crewed landing target around 2030 and work on positioning and navigation systems in the region.
Cislunar space covers a volume far larger than geosynchronous orbit and presents unique navigation and station keeping challenges.
The question is no longer whether the military will operate near the Moon, but how quickly those systems will be fielded.
