Washington says the Strait of Hormuz is cleared and open. The ships say otherwise. And Iraq has stopped waiting for either side.
The real story this week is where Iraq’s oil money goes, and who can finally see it.
The claim and the water
President Trump announced the strait cleared of mines, put a Zero Tolerance warning on new ones, and posted that America is about to make a fortune in the Middle East and Gulf. On the water, commercial traffic is running near 1% of normal, a tanker took a projectile off Oman on Monday night, and war-risk insurers have pulled cover. A demined strait that no ship will cross is still a closed strait.
The routes Iraq built
• Ceyhan to Turkey – renewed at 750,000 barrels a day, signed at the start of August
• Development Road – the $17 billion route to the Mediterranean, with a second line under study
• September 1 – new export contracts dated to begin in days, on routes that never touch the strait
• The account in New York – every dollar of Iraqi oil has cleared through one Federal Reserve account since 2003
Why it matters for the dinar
For 20 years the region’s wealth moved through hidden channels, and the banks caught moving it paid $17.7 billion in fines. Cutting that money out of the shadows and onto books the world can audit is the groundwork under everything Baghdad is doing, from the new banknotes to the export map. The salary squeeze, the ordered notes, the September routes and the sanctions perimeter are not separate stories. They are one operation.
