No Shield Left in Baghdad

The last political force in Iraq with the muscle to slow the corruption sweep reportedly asked Prime Minister al-Zaidi to stop this week. He did not stop. Every door the old machine knocked on stayed shut.
The arrests were Sunday’s story. The refusals are this week’s, and they tell you more about the dinar than any rate rumour.
The Ask That Went Nowhere
Iraqi press channels report the Coordination Framework, the Iran-aligned bloc that assembled the last government, privately directed al-Zaidi to halt the arrest campaign and convert the cases into financial settlements. Pay it back, close the file, no handcuffs. The judiciary answered in public: arrest warrants belong to the courts, and no political bloc has the authority to waive the rights of Iraqi citizens. The bloc ended the week publicly endorsing the campaign it had reportedly tried to stop.
Every Door Bolted
• The speaker – lifted the immunity of the arrested lawmakers himself and declared on the record there is “no immunity for the corrupt.” The July 5 session to seat the final 9 ministers, interior and defence included, is locked with the votes signalled.
• The central bank – the new anti-money-laundering governor walked into the speaker’s office on day 1 of the session and put “protection of the national currency” into the official readout.
• Europe – Iraq signed a working arrangement with Eurojust, the EU’s criminal justice agency, opening a direct channel for cross-border asset recovery. The 13th country outside the EU to hold one.
• The north – Kurdistan’s own forces arrested 3 wanted suspects in Erbil at Baghdad’s request and handed them over at the checkpoint. A travel ban now covers every name in the inquiry.
• The street – Muqtada al-Sadr backed the campaign as a “heroic reformist campaign” and called Friday rallies under the Iraqi flag only.
• The count – the running seizure tally being discussed in Baghdad has passed 219 billion dinars and $85 million in cash, with seized banknotes reportedly catalogued and destroyed so they never re-enter circulation.
