SOMETHING INCREDIBLE WAS DISCOVERED 12 BILLION LIGHT-YEARS FROM EARTH
Deep in space lies a gigantic cloud of water vapor containing about 140 trillion times more water than all of Earth’s oceans combined.
This colossal reservoir surrounds a supermassive black hole at the center of the distant quasar APM 08279+5255.
But the most astonishing part isn’t its size.
The light from this object traveled for nearly 12 billion years before reaching us. That means we are seeing it as it existed when the Universe was only about 1.6 billion years old – shortly after the first generations of stars and galaxies began to form.
In other words, vast quantities of water already existed near the dawn of cosmic history.
The discovery forced scientists to rethink how quickly the elements necessary for water formation could have appeared after the Big Bang.

Of course, this is not a giant cosmic ocean or a water-covered planet. It is an enormous cloud of water vapor stretching across hundreds of light-years around an active galactic nucleus.
Still, the implications are mind-blowing:
Long before our Sun, our planets, or even the Milky Way as we know it today existed, immense reservoirs of water were already present somewhere in the young Universe.
Perhaps water is one of the oldest and most common ingredients in the cosmos – not the rare exception we once imagined.
The more we explore the Universe, the more we discover that many things we consider unique to Earth may be far more common than we ever believed.
