I was recently informed of Magellan’s Ship Syndrome, a recurring pattern Magellan observed when his ship approached various islands on its travels: the natives being so overawed by the sight of such a grand vessel—entirely outside their normal frame of reference—were completely disarmed from their usual response to strangers, setting aside their spears and rowing out to meet it.
I automatically thought of two more examples where this idea has relevance. The first was the Book of Job and how a big revelation of something awesome but not foreign or alien to him rather something he was very much a part of, namely Creation itself, took the challenge and dissent right out of his windsails.
The second was the ‘Someone’s knocking at the door’ awakening that lies ahead of us in terms of becoming official: the revelation of the true nature of the universe.
Look how we have been conditioned to think how something so vast and full of evolving life with thriving societies – both physical and inner dimensional – is a near infinite echo chamber – that might grudgingly yield a smudge of bacteria on some distant moon somewhere – in which one message circulates: you are really the only significant event here, get used to the emptiness, if God wanted and created a full universe you can be very sure the fact would have found your ears by now …
Think how that has shaped everything from our theology to our imagination’s scope. More importantly, given that by far the majority of civilisations are benevolent – each one caught up in and celebrating the beauty of their own magnificent expression – think of how our hearts have been effectively shut down.
The possibilities denied us by the rigidities and limitations of the imprisoning worldview that has characterised this planet for so long.
To introduce and firmly embed toxic ‘norms’ of human behaviour involving power and hostility, there must first be an impenetratable veil drawn across any thriving observable examples that life could quite easily be lived successfully and happily any other way.

So we have a moment of reframing ahead, wouldn’t you say … A planetary rite of passage when we climb out of the playpen that passes for normal thought hereabouts and join in and partake of the Big Society – always on our own evolving terms, of course.
We are a baby terrapin, seemingly cut off in a shoreline pool, thinking the still water and changing sky is all there ever was and will be, when the next big wave that’s coming will return the whole ocean to it and it to the whole ocean.
Or, more appropriately. We are pieces of eternity, locked in forever to something truly amazing that is waiting to awe our minds and tease our hearts ever more open as the planet finally burns off the heavy, leaden shroud of amnesia it has dragged purposively along through the deathly ages of our recent history.
A weight relentlessly and brutally hammering home the message that we always have been and will be, alone in this accidentally brought about, exquisite tiny bubble of enclosed life.
How could we ever be alone!
We are Job waiting to be reinstated into his original blessing – plus. With all the very welcome readjustment of perspective that goes along with it.
