A WORLD OF TANGIBLE SOUND

Physics classes will often conduct experiments with pure tones, observing their effects on various media: sand, oil, water, etc. Participating in these on occasion, I have seen sand arrange itself in precise geometric formation when the bow of a violin was drawn across the tin plate on which it was resting. I have seen certain tones cause oil floating on the surface of water to coagulate into cell-like configurations that seemed to grow and divide like amoeba as the tone’s pitch was slowly raised, I have seen tiny grains of salt stand one upon the other and dance like human figures as they experienced a vibrating surface beneath them.

The nucleus of each atom is made up of these “nodes of resonance.” Each atom is itself vibrating at a phenomenal rate of up to ten to the fourteenth power times per second, emitting a single note about twenty octaves above the range of our hearing. Seismographs pick up minor, but consistent tremors of the earth, with vibration periods every 53.1 and 54.7 minutes. These mini-earthquakes produce a tone about twenty octaves below the range of our hearing. Existing midway between the subatomic sopranos and the planetary basses, human beings inhabit a world of tangible sound.

Perhaps Pythagoras was on to something 2,500 years ago when he suggested that matter was actually “frozen music.” Even the electrochemical activity of the brain is directed and organized by subtle wave vibrations. Our five physical senses are each rooted in vibration. Perception of light too is a vibratory event. When you glance for a single second at the yellow leaves of an autumnal elm, the dye molecules in the retina of your eye vibrate 500 trillion times—more waves in that single second than all the ocean waves that have beat upon the earth’s shores since the first morning of creation.

Vibration is found at the root of every phenomenon; but in a fallen world, not all sound affects us equally. There are discharged sounds that deplete human energy as well as charged sounds that bring us strength and vitality. The power of these charged sounds is illustrated by Benedictine monks who have found that they can go for years on no more than three hours sleep per night provided they chant six to eight hours each day. When the length of their chanting is shortened, their need for sleep increases proportionately.

The same mechanism that allows us to hear a portion of the sound spectrum provides us with our sense of balance. It is the very same ear with which we listen to our world that provides us with our alignment to the earth’s gravity.

At the fluid point of balance between time and eternity, our mind/brains face the opportunity of replicating all creation in specified dimensional terms. When resonance occurs, we sense the creative first sound with every breath and feel a timeless purpose with every beat of the heart.

Within us, around us, the music of the spheres unfolds in rhythms celestial and melodies terrestrial. More than just the hills are alive with music. Matter and light themselves are secondary aspects of sound. The phenomenal structure inherent in every tone emerges as the first expression of reality formation.

In the beginning was the creative sound, the primal tone, that contained within it every sound, symphony, harmony and melody, every pattern and structure ever to be. The Word that was with God has not ceased to be; this very moment, it holds suspended within its vibratory magnificence, every atom, molecule, cell and organism. It sings the very earth into being.

The sun, moon and planets share in a symphony of the heavens that includes every comet, asteroid and star-system in our galaxy—and in a billion others. In this beginning is the Word. The Word is with God. And the Word is God. The Word brings each of us into dimensional expression.
