Writer’s notes:

Full Circle to the last word herein which has the dual-purpose of being the last word in my poem and also serving as the sign off for this article;

‘It Don’t Come Easy’ ‘GO’ing through life knowing that my Latin and French derived name ‘Grant’ means Great.

895

Got to score the goal to make the hockey roll
An empty-netter’s too easy
Go ahead and shout and leap about
We know it don’t come easy (Ringo Starr adapt-a-tad)
This article is dedicated to Alexander Ovechkin and Wayne Gretzky and the Great Game ‘Hockey’.

If only you knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have the key to the universe.
Nikola Tesla

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.” (Shakespeare – Henry IV, Part 2, Act 3, Scene 1)

Number 99, wearing the NHL Scoring Crown Wayne retired in 1999, 6 goals shy of 900.

If we can get the kid to play hockey, who’s to say what really happened? Maybe we have a hero.
[the interrogator leaves the room and shuts the door. EE alone, smiles]
Chief through intercom: You want to tell me what you’re smiling about?
EE: A hero.
How could he know what we were saying?
Chief pushes intercom button: And?
EE: In a situation like this, you’re going to need more than one.
(L.A. Confidential, 1997 movie, adapt-a-tad)

What light through yonder window breaks?” (Romeo and Juliet, Act 2, Scene 2)

A Capital Achievement

On April 6, 2025 the 39 year old Washington Capitals’ captain Alexander Ovechkin scored goal 895 in the National Hockey League (NHL) surpassing the record held by Wayne Gretzky.

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.” (Shakespeare, Twelfth Night Act 2 Scene 5)

Поздравляем Овечкина

Writer’s Mandalic Memory: maybe 10 years ago I saw Dylan Strome and Connor McDavid play Junior A hockey defeating the at-home North Bay Battalion. Strome got 3 points and McDavid 2. Strome was amazing. With Strome on his line, setting him up, it is no wonder that Ovechkin is scoring big time.

Birthdays are good for Hockey Players. Studies show that Hockey Players who have more birthdays live the longest.

What? Did I drop the puck? Round birthday cakes sure look-a-like-a puck.

Shakespeare playing hockey: A goal! a goal! My kingdom for a goal.

And Shakespeare playing Ovechkin:
There are more goals in Ice Hockey, Wayner, than are dreamt of in your Gretzockey.

Humor from Russia
I prefer to be alone, as long as I’m with someone… (Sergei DovlatOV, The Suitcase)

Russian Wisdom

When work is a pleasure, life is a joy! When work is a duty, life is slavery. (Maxim Gorky, The Lower Depths)

Symbolism

Gretzky Ovechkin => GO

Strome, Number 17 => Q passed the puck to OV

OV: O is letter 15 = 3 x 5, digits reduce to 6 and V is letter 22 = 2 x master number 11, reduces to 4 and 4 is always a portal on Mother Earth, and OV multiplies 15 x 22 = 330 for Earth, the 33rd Star Nation

894 => 8 + 9 = 17 so Q, and 4
894 = 6 x 149
894 reduces to 21 or trip 7, then 3 for a Hat Trick and the number of Creation for the Holy Trinity
Ovechkin’s number 8 => infinity symbol sideways and 2 to the power of 3
Gretzky’s number 99 and retired in 99 => digits add to 18, digits add to 9

895 => 8 + 9 = 17 still a Q and 5
The Year 2025 = 45 x 45 = 5 x 405 = 25 x 81 = 5 x 5 x 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 (Tesla smiles)
895 = 5 x 179 and I see another 17 for Q and a 9
895 = 900 – 5 with 5 games left in the season for OV; 900 = 30 x 30

‘Howe’ did he do it?
If you can believe: All things are possible
OV believed

Every man, in order to act, must believe that what he does is important and good. (Leo Tolstoy, Resurrection)

And the Gods?
Well, Wayne: The Gods insure against too much glory.

Still.

Gretzky’s Professional Hockey Goal and Assist Records

WHA career total 46 goals and 64 assists for 110 points

Yes!!!! Gretzky broke the 2,000 career assists barrier.

(Playoffs stats excluded in above. Wayne scored 122 playoff goals, so 1,016 goals in the NHL.)

My favorite Gretzky NHL stat is 50 hat tricks.

Still, to date, with 1,963, Gretzky has more NHL assists than any other player has total points.

Other

Single Game NHL Points Record #TBT: Darryl Sittler’s 10 Point game

February 6, 1976 Sittler scores 6 goals and 4 assists against the Boston Bruins breaking Richard (Rocket) Richard’s record of 5 goals and 3 assists in a single game.

No player has scored exactly 9 points in an NHL game.

List of players with eight or more points in an NHL game – Wikipedia

Mario Lemieux had 8 points 3 times, Wayne Gretzky twice.

Lemieux had 199 points in the 1988-89 season. Gretzky is the only player with more than 200 points in a single season, achieving that feat 4 times. He holds the single season scoring record of 92 goals, and the single season point record of 215. That was 52 goals and 163 assists in 80 games. Regarding single season assists, behind Gretzky are Mario Lemieux with 114, Bobby Orr with 102, and Connor McDavid just hit 100 this season.

As a kid my hero was Bobby Orr. I traded my stack of more than 60 NHL player cards for Orr’s card, except I kept Phil Esposito’s and Gerry Cheevers cards as I was a Boston Bruins fan because of Orr. I have an autographed from Bobby photo ‘To Grant’ – Bobby’s horizontal midair … just scored the Stanley Cup winning goal. Gretzky was my hero and even though I know more about infinity than most, he still is. Lemieux was Great as well. Many others.

I had the great pleasure of being in Irving Ungerman’s pre-hockey hall of fame room at the chicken plant, working in that room, alone at times, inspecting the memorabilia: sticks with all the names above and 100 more signed items – impressive. Eddy Shack walked in on me. Things you remember.

I sure would like an autographed Gretzky pic, and OV now too. And God, if there is a parallel Universe where Orr was not knee-injured and had a full career, please let me view all Bobby’s games. Love You.

Will Ovechkin break the 900 goal barrier? Will he retire? Will he keep playing for the 1,000 goal gold?

If hockey be the game we love, play on. (Shakespeare adapt-a-tad)

Permission is granted without fee to me for Alexander Ovechkin, Wayne Gretzky, Gary Bettman and or the NHL, individually or collectively, to freely use my poem ‘The Great Goal Getter’, in part or in whole, for positive purposes in the promotion of hockey, preferably hockey tending toward as little violence as possible (I played and refereed so I understand clean checking versus cheap shots), and no credit to me is necessary, but if you will, just ‘Grant’, or ‘A Great Hockey Fan’. Thank you for the thrills.

The Great Goal Getter

Strome 17 to 8 Ovechkin
Center to left winger
OV shoots a zinger
