Self-Reflection Time [19]: Dreams, Nightmares, and Reality
I’ve written 18 previous posts on this website, sharing bits and pieces from past interactions with family and my own experiences. All shared were with one purpose: to provide an option (a choice) for building the foundation for a new version of humanity; not in being (we’re currently living that passive version), but in doing (people with a bias for action whose thoughts, words, and actions are aligned).
Let others point to monuments of men in being, but… YOU be the daily living “doing” example for your family to follow. In America, we’ve solved a lot of problems and perhaps, by other people’s design or a lost presence of our minds, we’ve created a lot of problems. Well, now we’re almost at the correction point that accompanies a massive tsunami of metaphoric proportions; where actions taken outside our span of control will begin the process to “right the ship” that is this grand experiment called America.
James McHenry (1753-1816) kept a journal while a Maryland delegate to the US Constitutional Convention. On September 18, 1787, he wrote: “A lady asked Dr. Franklin. Well, Doctor what have we got a republic or a monarchy – A republic replied the Doctor if you can keep it.” McHenry noted: “The Lady here alluded to was Mrs. Powel of Philada.” America cannot move forward with the majority population just “being;” for everyone to enjoy reaching their potential, they have to have a bias for action; they have to present the example of “doing.”
In a war zone, “being” won’t accomplish the mission; however, “doing” can keep you in the game and accomplishing the mission. In Afghanistan, I narrowly missed becoming another war statistic. My EOD buddies who took a look at what remained of my living quarters after an attack said, “God’s looking out for you. Had you remained inside your quarters a few minutes longer overlapping when that bomb detonated…your lungs would have exploded. You would have been a concussion k!ll.” But, this wasn’t my first experience facing the life/d3ath daily struggle.
I noted how Viktor Frankl wrote about his experiences and observations in the d3ath camps of WWII; almost like a third party observer. For me, the first time I experienced combat was surreal for a fraction of a moment until my head got back in the game and I regained focus. Be mindful, those in a firefight who are not pulling triggers at the time are all being observers of what happens around them (usually at a heightened sense of awareness).
Fast forward to today…Sometimes I go for long periods where my memories are shelved. Other times, it is like an earthquake hit and the memories start falling off the shelves as I’m catching all of them. Over the years I’ve managed to become the third-party observer in some of those particularly emotionally charged memories, but it was hard, very hard to make that transition…to do what God asks…to appreciate and be grateful. I found solace in “being like water.” Everyone appreciates water; especially the thirsty.

But, those were distant times and places… The bill that lay on Humanity’s table has been paid in full by those who went before us…sitting on the other side of the diner. It’s time to stand up, appreciate and be grateful for the actions of our fellow diners that paid the tab and head back to the house. if everyone aspired to “Be the American worth fighting for…” Wouldn’t this land and our world be a better place?
