Live Aid, Saturday, July 13, 1985

I missed it.  Completely.  I didn’t even know it was happening. I was with my beloved computers that Saturday in 1985. A 28-year-old workaholic. Looking back, to me now, it just seems terribly sad.

Live Aid 1985 was a “multi-venue” concert, considered a single concert event even though it was held in two places:  London’s Wembley Stadium, and at the John F. Kennedy stadium in Philadelphia.  In London, the performances lasted 16 hours and were attended by the Prince and Princess of Wales (Charles and Diana)

There were 72,000 in the stadium that evening with an estimated global audience of 1.9 billion people, across 150 nations, watching the live broadcast via satellite link-ups and television broadcasts.  The world population was estimated at 4.85 million in 1985, which meant that nearly 40% of the global population watched that event live.  I was not among them.  I know exactly where I was that day.  Like every other day, I was at work.  And I’ve come to regret that.

Playing only a 20-minute set, Queen totally stole that show.  It’s so hard to believe that only six years later, Freddie Mercury was so totally wasted away he couldn’t get out of bed without assistance, and he was losing his eyesight.  That chills my blood. And so does the attitude displayed toward that terrible disease in the 1980’s by those who possessed the resources to do something about it.
