Near the beginning of Judy Byington’s above post were these Bible verses:
“A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity. The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming.” …Psalm 37:10-13
From a young age, the Bible’s use of the word “meek” bothered me. Some research in my later years suggested the following:

This author’s (Horseman51) opinion and interpretation:
In Old Hebrew text, the word usually translated as “meek” meant: moderate in scope; i.e. implying kind in intent, gentle in posture and soft or mild in execution. Its linguistic context commonly indicated one who stood in the certainty and power of his/her righteous convictions and without internal distress.

This Old Hebrew word had nothing to do with anxious or unconscious compliance, cowed submissiveness, being spineless or spiritless or docile under provocation, tame obedience or other self-effacing behaviors. Thoughtful people wonder why there is now such an emphasis on these negative inferences of the word “meek.”
