Smart meters have both a positive and a very negative aspect.
The positive one allows a meter reader to record how much electricity has been used without the meter reader leaving his vehicle. The utility companies gives the excuse for installing them as saving money by speeding up the entire process of reading meters every month.
One huge negative is the fact a smart meter allows the utility company to steal electricity from the customer. This theft is accomplished by a wire which runs from the house side of the meter back around to the grid side of the meter. A few electronic parts such as a diode and resister allows the theft. The diode acts like a traffic cop only allowing current to flow in one direction and a resister regulates the amount of current flowing back to the grid. A law prevents anyone from disassembling a smart meter to see inside it. The police are also used to harass anyone refusing to allow one to be installed on a home. Another tactic is for the meter reader to estimate the amount of electricity which is used each month and double the amount from the previous month. If a customer complains, it may instigate a visit from the local law enforcement as a scare tactic. If the customer complains too strongly an arrest may occur. I have always refused the installation of a smart meter and suffered all of the above because of my refusal.
