I’m disappointed in everyone, including myself. People say we aren’t supposed to have regrets but I do. I study my mistakes and look for the ripples.
Back in 1997 I went out to LA to make a standup comedy documentary. I was 37.
There is a story of success and failure here. When a comedian writes and crafts jokes and routines, the success is heard in laughter.
In life, people try to survive by monetizing what they are good at. I have been fighting that war for 6 decades. Now it isn’t about surviving a month of bills, it is about trying to leave a few things behind I hope will put money into the pocket of my son.
This quest is still far from guaranteed. People want billions of us dead and leaving a legacy hardly seems like a logical desire. But over the months to come you will see me position some of these productions in hope of good things after I am gone.
My screenwriting professor emphasized conflict as necessary to a story. I have come to enjoy that rare story that asks why. Why can’t we enjoy a story that is just enjoyable characters who don’t need turmoil for it to be a story.
