(Reader: Steve K) Regarding Flat Earth Theory

One of the things that strikes me most strongly in suggesting the Earth is in fact more or less spherical is the observation of other celestial bodies.

We can see for ourselves that the sun is round, that the moon is round and with the aid of a modest telescope we can see that Jupiter is also round and that all of Jupiter’s moons are round as well. With more powerful optical equipment we can see that all the planets in our system are in fact round, so we have no real reason to suppose that Earth would be any different.

Once, while discussing a pending trip from Australia to the UK with a Chinese neighbor, he advised me of the quickest and cheapest way to travel, taking a trip he had made several times himself.

By flying to Hong Kong (north of Australia) and from Hong Kong flying north on the polar route to London, quite a lot of time is saved because it is a shorter, more direct route than the east/west option – hard to explain how this could be possible if the Earth was flat.

On a flat Earth the distance between points has to remain constant in much the same way it remains constant in other models, (except for the small daily fluctuations due to tides – and the larger more infrequent fluctuations caused by tectonic activity). Even so, we are not talking in terms of hours saved in flying time. On a flat Earth the shortest distance between a point in Australia and London would be a straight line, with no other options.

Having flown long distance on several occasions myself and seen the curvature of the Earth for myself, I somehow doubt there would be many airline pilots who subscribe to the ‘flat earth’ theory. The fact that the Earth is round is self-evident.

On a clear evening, even non-fliers standing on a high point overlooking the ocean towards the east will be able to see the rim of the Earth’s shadow rising as the sun sets in the west. The shadow is curved, not flat.

If the Earth was flat there would be no need for time zones. The sun would be shining above the horizon everywhere at the same time, unless we are expected to believe that the sun works like a giant spotlight that can shine this way and that – and somehow is able to whip around the flat Earth imperceptibly to create the illusion of a subtle transition from darkness to light, as happens naturally on a rotating globe.
