I began my morning posting about President Kennedy and PT109 and close my day with his son, John, standing on top of George Washington’s head on Mount Rushmore last year.

August 1, 1943 Lieutenant John F. Kennedy
& his ‘patrol torpedo boat’ PT109
were sent to Rendova Island to harass a Japanese convoy.
The 2000 ton Amagiri rammed little 25m PT109
setting her fuel tanks on fire. 2 men died instantly.
Lt. Kennedy & the survivors abandoned the sinking ship
& swam toward Kasolo.
In an extraordinary feat of endurance
the injured Kennedy towed one badly injured seaman
4 km with the strap of his life vest clenched in his mouth.
After a week+ stranded on an island & more daring adventures,
A.R. “Reg” Evans, an Australian Coast Watcher from NSW,
while stationed on the Solomon Islands,
was among those who rescued Kennedy & the crew of PT109.
Upon receiving the Purple Heart & Marine Corps Medal
JFK quipped, “It was involuntary. They sunk my boat.”

in honor of the AU & NSW Coast Watchers
who helped rescue his dad in WW2.
The AU & NSW Coast Watchers had a
