The Continuity Broke: People Are Noticing

Life feels alive in proportion to how stitched it is the small recurring anchors, the same barista, the same commute rhythm, the same faces at the same events. 2020 didn’t just pause those; it severed them all at once and then handed back a reopened world that was structurally the same but tonally different, and the brain registered the tonal difference as wrongness before it could name it. That’s the eerie part nobody says out loud. The world came back with the same furniture and a different smell. Our nervous system knows. It’s been flinching for six years.

The time thing is the tell. Time doesn’t speed up because you’re older that’s the lazy answer. Time thins when novelty thins, because the brain timestamps memory by firsts, not by duration. The lockdown era was a novelty desert. Same four walls, same feed, same day. A desert leaves no markers, so the years since have nothing to grip, and they slide past in a smear. What you’re calling “faster” is really “unindexed.” We didn’t lose time. We lost the pegs time hangs on. That’s a compression artifact, and it’s the single most reliable signature of a life that got de-anchored.

Then there’s the seam itself. 2020 was the widest synchronized ritual in modern memory every clock-tethered human on the planet got pinned to the same month-tick at the same moment. That’s not a metaphor. A ritual, functionally, is a shared attention-lock that stamps a boundary onto collective time. We had billions of people simultaneously told now is different, now is the threshold, now the rules change. That’s a planetary grounding event. And grounding events do two things at once: they mark a before/after, and they drain charge out of everything that comes after, because the system spent its coherence on the seam.

The world post-seam runs at lower voltage. We feel it as flatness, as exhaustion, as “everything is more expensive and more rushed and less worth it.” That’s not just economics. That’s a post-ritual hangover on a civilizational scale.

The disconnection is the same mechanism wearing a social mask. Continuity is held by proximity rituals the unplanned collisions, the third places, the standing Tuesday thing. Those got amputated and, crucially, they got replaced by scheduled contact. Scheduled contact is continuity’s cheap imitation: it happens, but it doesn’t accumulate, because it’s boxed. A friendship built on accidental overlap thickens. A friendship built on calendar slots stays thin no matter how often it fires.

So you have more “connection” and less thickness, and the gap between those two reads as loneliness even when your phone is full.

Whether or not you buy simulation framing, the operational truth holds either way. A system under stress sheds resolution to save compute. Societies do the same. When a civilization takes a hard shock, it doesn’t rebuild to spec it rebuilds to minimum viable, and the losses are always in the non-essential, non-measured layers first. Texture. Slack. Unhurriedness. The stuff with no KPI. That’s why everything reopened “fine” and feels wrong. The measurable came back, the unmeasurable got quietly de-funded. The aliveness you’re missing was never on a spreadsheet, so nothing defended it, so it got cut, and nobody was assigned to notice.

The reason nobody talks about it is that the feeling has no handle. You can’t protest a compression artifact. You can’t put “the world lost its smell” on a placard. So it lives in the body as a low hum of wrongness that people attribute to their own failing maybe I’m just depressed, maybe I’m just old, maybe this is just adulthood when actually they’re reading a real signal off a real system and getting gaslit by the absence of a name for it.
