The Winery Was Never About Wine
Mynett’s Mille Lacs Winery was a paper organism. The barrels were empty because the product was never grape juice it was a liquidity bridge between the Horn of Africa hawala networks and the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee. Empty barrels were not a sign of failure; they were a sign of optimized throughput. A full barrel has traceable contents. An empty barrel has a serial number, a receipt, and a weight that matches a filled barrel on paper.
The winery’s warehouse in St. Cloud was a mixing room where cash brought in duffel bags from Minneapolis taxi drivers was logged as “bulk wine purchases” from imaginary suppliers in Hargeisa. The invoices were real. The product was a fiction. The cash became legal revenue, then traveled to Omar’s campaign as maximum-dollar donations routed through LLCs that had been filing tax-exempt forms as “agricultural cooperatives.”
The Visa Was The Real Payload
Mynett converted to Islam in 2020 to marry Omar. That conversion was a sworn affidavit used to petition for his spousal visa. But the marriage was a cargo manifest. The visa allowed Mynett to travel between Mogadishu, Djibouti, Nairobi, and Minneapolis without triggering secondary screening. He became a courier for what the Somalian diaspora calls xawilaad the informal transfer system that moves money from the U.S. to the Horn faster and cheaper than any bank.
The winery’s invoicing system was his cover for moving cash in the other direction: from Somali political money men and their Quds Force intermediaries back into U.S. election cycles. The FBI has been watching the visa petition since 2021. They let it through because a denied visa would have sent Mynett underground. An approved visa kept him on a leash.
The Somali Bloc Is A Lever, Not A Conspiracy
What outsiders call the “Somali political bloc” in Minneapolis is actually a franchise operation run by a small number of families who moved from the refugee camps to the U.S., gained citizenship, and built a turnout machine that delivers 10-15% of the vote in MN-5. Those families are not ideologues. They are businesspeople. Their currency is loyalty. Their product is access. Omar became their congresswoman because she was willing to trade committee votes for their endorsement. The winery was the method by which they paid for that endorsement without leaving a paper trail that the FEC could follow.
The indictment will name at least three staffers from the Minneapolis caucus who actively solicited straw donations through the winery’s vendor network. It will also name two registered lobbyists who used the winery’s event space for briefing meetings with Somali clan elders meetings that were not disclosed on Omar’s financial disclosure forms as required by the Lobbying Disclosure Act.
