We Are Not Our Sun Signs
– The Enormous Astrological Oversimplification That Limits Who We Are

The main purpose of this essay is to deconstruct the notion that who we are can be understood by naming our Sun sign. In doing that, we minimize and misdirect ourselves and others. We’re a lot more than our Sun sign alone can say. Why frivolously limit what we are?

We’ll start with some metapsychology to understand what’s driven us into this tight corner…

We’re So Sure That We Are People

We humans have a very strong inclination to identify with things outside ourselves.

We think we are people. We think we are our egos, and therefore mortal. The problem here is that ego attaches to things to protect its existence. We unnecessarily define ourselves and lose touch with our inherent limitlessness of being – it becomes unavailable to us when we put our attention on a fixed and finite form instead. We can’t flow as a wave if we decide we’re just a particle.

“I am this. I have that. I am a man, a woman, a success, a failure. I am an Aries. I am a Taurus. That defines me – it says what I am. I am a person, a character in this play.”

But, as every actor knows, who we play is not who we are.

When the Greeks threw plays, the players wore masks with little, round sound amplification devices in the mouths. The masks were called per-sonae -literally, that through which the sound comes. We souls have forgotten that we are the sound, not the mask, the actor, the character we play. To ‘be’ a Sun sign is to think we are a mask.

When we identify as something we have to protect, we are choosing an illusory security over freedom.

But when we relax and just play with stuff, not taking things too seriously, life becomes funner and flows better – and flow is what it’s all about. You can’t play music unless you let the music flow. You can’t flow your dance unless you follow your Muse, and She is definitely not doing a lot of thinking or planning. She’s not a strategist. While egos are busy calculating chess moves to the power of twenty, She just simply responds. Each note from the river of Life moves Her spontaneously.

Down through the series of events popularly know as time and history (our-story ) we have progressively mired ourselves in materialism and the costumes we wear, our illusions of self, and we’ve now got a corrupted version of a society with annoying corruptions all over the place, including in the world of astrology.

Astrology is a tool for understanding our life path, our evolutionary direction, so we can walk it more easily. It is not for predicting who will be President or what the best day to buy a lottery ticket is. It is the itinerary of our current incarnation, and where we are going as a group.

Astrology is the map (our chart) that we follow in our body (our boat), with our awareness (our captain) in the pilot’s seat sailing the Sea of Life. And to properly navigate to where we want to go we need many hands on deck, not just one, no matter how bright and powerful that one is.

Why Doesn’t the Sun Sign Say It All?

Modern popular astrology claims that the Sun sign represents the soul, the person, and therefore what we are.

This is type-casting and is misleading.

The Sun is not personal; it is an expression of Universal Energy. It is the Solar Logos beaming loving light on everything so it grows. It provides the Source energy needed for our evolution.

The Sun sign, therefore, represents the kind of energy we use to fulfill our purpose in life.

Astrological leader Robert Hand:

“It is the practice in modern popular astrology to describe the entire personality in terms of the sign occupied by the Sun. This is, of course, born of a desire to present astrology in a simplified manner suitable for the general public in newspapers, magazines and annual volumes for ‘your year ahead.’ Aside from the enormous oversimplification that this represents, the main flaw of this method is that the Sun does not represent the totality of the personality. In many individuals, other symbolism can completely overwhelm the Sun’s energy and submerge it in favor of stronger signs or planetary symbols.

“What the Sun represents is the active energy of the personality in its most general form. It tends to express itself through what an individual does and the activities each person is attracted to. It does not say much about emotions, general behavior or other matters of that kind. Ultimately, the entire chart must be consulted for a complete understanding of individual character.”

We really need a minimum of the three essential parts to begin to clarify what a person is doing on Earth – the Sun, Moon, and Rising signs.

The Sun sign expresses the specific kind of energy we will need to complete our destiny.

The Moon sign represents where we came from; it is like the mother on our chart. We inherit from it certain traits and talents and it is easy to implement them because they are familiar. However, it doesn’t represent what we are here to learn and grow to be.

The Rising is where we are going and what we intend from a soul level to become as a human being; it is like one’s major in college. It represents the kinds of experiences and behaviors that will alchemize and embody us into a certain kind of person – the kind that particular tribe of persons represents. In order to mature, we must become more like our Rising and less like our Moon.

To know our Sun sign alone tells us little about the trajectory of our soul. That would be like saying that because we know what kind of gas is in our car, we know where it is taking us.

For instance, if we were born when the Sun was in the sign (a section of space) called Libra, and the section of space that was Rising at the time was Scorpio, then we will want to use Libran means to create a Scorpionic embodiment. We will attempt to balance or equalize things (Libra) in order to create the experience of gaining power for ourself (Scorpio).

So What Do We Do Instead?

We can construct a very useable interpretation from a quick sketch of a chart by explaining the five most essential parts:

Sun, Moon, Rising, House position of the North Node, and, whether the subject is a man or a woman, the sign Mars or Venus is in.

We already discussed the first three parts. Here are the others:

The North Node – Our specific job position in the Rising tribe (or mystery school) we are born into, our primary focus. Our specialty in the major we have chosen to study.

Venus on a woman’s chart – The kind of woman she is here to be. A woman born when Venus is in the sign of Aries would naturally be an Arien (Wild) woman.

Mars on a man’s chart – The kind of man he is here to be. A man born when Mars is in the sign of Sagittarius would naturally be a Sagittarian (Visionary) man.

This is the most compact reading one can use to get a good, clear view of basic personality traits and trajectory.

A quick sketch using these for a real person would look like this:

Let’s give our nameless soul example the birthday of July 3, 1953, 2:45 a.m. in Bridgeport, Connecticut, USA…

Sun and Mars conjunct in Cancer – This says a lot. Not only does he use Cancerian energy to achieve his goal, but he is also a Cancerian man, so he’s very empathic, creative, emotional, with a strong familial nature and a strong affinity with ‘home.’ He is a natural nurturer. This person could actually be called a Cancerian.

Venus and the Ascendant conjunct in Taurus – As Venus has a very strong resonance with Taurus, this combination produces a very strong Taurus tribe affinity, the key focus being the enjoyment of esthetics and intimacy. Aiming to richly embody Taurian qualities, he is very beauty-focused, body-centered, and peace-loving. Between the Taurus and Cancer in his chart, he thrives on stability and taking good care of himself and others.

Moon in Aries – A fiery, adventurous, highly mobile and emotional nature, prone to ‘outbursts’ in defense of truth and freedom, this energy, when properly focused, would provide the necessary fuel to keep a home-body Cancerian from becoming stagnant. As the Moon represents his past, the overuse of its energy would detract from the ultimate fulfillment of the soul. If he were to be more the wild adventurer than the nurturing father, he would get lost. Here, the Aries in him must be a carefully moderated cooking flame or it could easily turn into a carelessly handled flame-thrower.

North Node (Aquarius) in the Ninth house  – His job in the Taurus tribe is the Visionary (9^th= Sag). He desires to create with a beautiful touch (Taurus) what inspires others to see a new world (Aquarius) where humanity functions as the family it really is (Cancer) and lives in peace and harmony (Taurus).

Synopsis: He uses nurturing energy to be a parenting, inspiring and guiding visionary who brings an appreciation and enjoyment of esthetics and intimacy to the world. In doing this, he makes the world a more unified, peaceful place.

From here, one would add in the other planets and their aspects to make a thorough picture of one’s life path.

A Note About Asteroids Before We Wrap-Up

I don’t believe in asteroids. I think we are making up a lot of stuff regarding them. The oldest one we’ve got is Chiron, discovered in only 1977, a mere forty-nine years ago, and it’s really, really small. Pluto is more than ten times its width.

How can less than a half-century possibly be long enough to truly understand whether it has any actual symbolic use? What about multi-generational effects? We have named every speck of dust that’s flying out there lately and imbued them with magical powers, and I’m just not buying it.

I’ll give you something pithy to compare this to.

A few years ago I had a long conversation with a retired MD/Acupuncturist who told me something really interesting about herbology in China. He said that if a doctor came up with a formula they thought was working really well, it would be submitted to the pharmacy for testing to be determined if it was good enough to add to their pharmacopeia.

How long would they test it?

One hundred to two hundred years.

That seems reasonable to me.

I think the misuse going on with asteroids is another product of the falling apart of the old paradigm system and the amplification of the ego’s childish, narcissistic drives. People are carried away, get wild, and make stuff up.

I don’t see any reason to depart from the standard planets and nodes, and I like the Part of Fortune also very much, partly because I trust Dane Rudhyar implicitly. I believe those items are plenty enough to give us what we need for a complete reading.

Less is more.
