The Iran Endgame

The last off-ramp between Washington and Tehran expired on Monday, and nobody built another one.
Inside the same 24 hours, Iraq received both of Tehran’s answers: 2 drones at a Prime Minister’s office before dawn, and a banker asking for $11 billion by the afternoon.
The day the file converged
Monday was not a normal news day. The memorandum that had kept Washington and Tehran talking reached its deadline, and President Trump refused to extend it, telling Iran to put up the white flag of surrender. The Revolutionary Guard answered by declaring a shift to an offensive posture it calls maximum deterrence. The talking phase is over, and both sides said so out loud.
Then look where it all landed: Baghdad and Erbil, in one day.
• The drones – at 12:28 in the morning, 2 Iranian Hadid-110 drones struck the private office of Kurdistan’s Prime Minister, Masrour Barzani, and the home of the region’s intelligence chief. Nobody was hurt. The Barzani family has been in Tehran’s crosshairs all year, but this is the first strike on the sitting Prime Minister’s own office.
• The banker – the governor of Iran’s central bank flew into Baghdad the same day, chasing roughly $11 billion in trapped Iranian funds. The Central Bank of Iraq’s own readout answered him with three words: governance, transparency, and international compliance.
• The night meeting – by evening, Iraq’s four most senior officials, the Prime Minister, the Speaker, the President and the Chief Justice, were in one room over three files: the weapons deadline, corruption with no red lines, and the salary crisis caused by the Hormuz shutdown.
• The rulebook – the same day in Washington, the US Treasury published its proposed rule implementing the GENIUS Act: who may issue digital dollars, and what clean-money checks they must pass. Federal licensing takes effect January 18, 2027.
• The street – the Central Bank of Iraq stayed silent on last weekend’s zeros announcement, an Iraqi economic watchdog formally demanded it speak, and Baghdad’s parallel dollar rate widened to 154,500 dinars per $100 against an official 131,000.
Every one of those stories ran on a different page. Not one outlet connected them.
