THE GREAT PYRAMID AS A “MACHINE”: FROM A PHARAOH’S TOMB TO AN ANCIENT DEVICE
The Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) at Giza is one of the most studied and mysterious structures of antiquity. Official Egyptology considers it the tomb of the pharaoh of the Fourth Dynasty (c. 2580-2560 BC), built with astonishing engineering precision. However, since the mid-20th century, alternative theories have gained popularity, suggesting that the pyramid is not merely a tomb but a complex “machine” – an energy accumulator, generator, observatory, or even a device for communicating with space. These ideas are based on the works of Edgar Cayce, Robert Bauval, Graham Hancock, Christopher Dunn, and others.
Edgar Cayce and the Atlantean Legacy
The American “sleeping prophet” Edgar Cayce (1877-1945), in his trance readings, claimed that the pyramids and the Sphinx were built by the descendants of the Atlanteans around 10,500 BC. According to him, after the catastrophe that destroyed Atlantis, the survivors brought advanced knowledge to Egypt. Beneath the Sphinx supposedly lies the “Hall of Records” – an underground library containing tablets, crystals, and the knowledge of an ancient civilization. Cayce predicted that the hall would be discovered in the late 20th or early 21st century, when humanity would be ready for these revelations.
Despite numerous expeditions and scans, no convincing evidence of such a hall has been found. Nevertheless, Cayce’s ideas influenced the entire field of alternative Egyptology.
The Orion Correlation Theory (Robert Bauval and Graham Hancock)
In 1994, engineer Robert Bauval, in the book The Orion Mystery (co-authored with Adrian Gilbert), proposed the Orion Correlation Theory. In his view, the three main pyramids of Giza precisely reproduce the arrangement of Orion’s Belt (the constellation associated in Ancient Egypt with the god Osiris). The Nile corresponded to the Milky Way, and the entire layout of the complex reflected the sky of around 10,500 BC – the time when, according to Hancock and Bauval, an advanced predecessor civilization existed.
Graham Hancock developed this idea further in the bestsellers Fingerprints of the Gods and Magicians of the Gods, linking it to a global “lost civilization.” The pyramid supposedly served not only as an observatory but also as part of a vast “mapping” or ritual complex preserving astronomical knowledge.
Critics point out that the correspondence is not exact and requires a particular viewing angle, while the proposed dating does not agree with archaeological evidence.
The Pyramid as an Energy Machine (Christopher Dunn)
Mechanical engineer Christopher Dunn, in the book The Giza Power Plant (1998) and later works (Giza: The Tesla Connection), proposed the most technical version. According to him, the Great Pyramid is an acoustic resonator and energy generator:

The granite blocks of the King’s Chamber (with their high quartz content) could convert the Earth’s mechanical vibrations into electricity (the piezoelectric effect).
The internal structure (the Grand Gallery, shafts, and relieving chambers) functioned as a system of resonators and filters.
The pyramid supposedly collected seismic energy, amplified it, and possibly produced hydrogen or microwaves. Dunn compares it to the technologies of Nikola Tesla.
Dunn emphasizes the exceptional precision of the stonework, the absence of soot from torches in certain chambers, and other “anomalies” that, in his opinion, cannot be explained solely by ritual purposes.
The Scientific View and Criticism
Mainstream archaeology and Egyptology reject these theories as speculation. The evidence includes:
Hieroglyphs bearing the names of Khufu’s work crews have been found inside the pyramids.
Radiocarbon dating and historical records confirm a construction date in the 26th century BC.
There is no evidence of “advanced technology” (metallurgy, electricity) on the required scale.

Alternative authors respond that mainstream science ignores anomalies and is biased. New technologies (GPR, Doppler tomography, thermography) regularly reveal voids and structures beneath Giza, fueling the debate, but so far they have not produced sensational confirmation.
Conclusion: A Mystery That Inspires
Regardless of whether the Great Pyramid was “merely” a tomb or something more, it remains a masterpiece of ancient engineering. The theories of Hancock, Bauval, Cayce, and Dunn, even if unproven, encourage us to look at humanity’s past in a new way and ask questions: how well do we truly understand our ancestors? And what else lies hidden beneath the sands of Giza?
These ideas continue to live on in popular culture, books, documentaries, and podcasts. Perhaps future discoveries – new scans or excavations – will provide greater clarity. Until then, the pyramid continues to guard its secrets – and inspire both supporters of alternative history and scientists alike.
