ANCIENT GIANTS IN AFRICA?
Algeria, Tassili n’Ajjer Plateau. Rock art dating to around 6000 BC (the “Round Head” period).
A huge figure with a disproportionately large head holds an elongated object. Next to it stands an ordinary human. The difference in height is several times over. This is one of many examples where ancient artists depicted giants alongside “normal” people.
This is not the only such image in Tassili. There are figures measuring 3-5+ meters on the rock walls, as well as the “Martians” (as discoverer Henri Lhote jokingly called them).
The scientific explanation is that this is most often hierarchical scale – important figures such as chiefs, shamans, or spirits were drawn larger. Or it is ritual symbolism. In addition, the “Round Head” style with large circular heads is typical of that period.
But the question remains: why do legends of giants and images of enormous “ancestors” appear independently in different cultures around the world, from Africa to South America? A coincidence or an echo of real memory?
