David E. Atterton: Iraq Just Took Its First City Back.

On June 4 a militia in Samarra lowered its own flag and handed the city to the Iraqi army. The first faction in the country to physically disarm to the state.
For two decades the men with the rifles were the real government of Iraq. This week, for the first time, a set of them switched sides – and the same week moved on four other fronts at once.
What Happened In Samarra
Saraya al-Salam, the faction loyal to Muqtada al-Sadr, gathered at its headquarters, lowered its banner, and handed the city to the Iraqi army with senior officers in the room. Sadr set a 7-day deadline against the Eid al-Ghadir holiday and his men beat it. For weeks the disarmament had lived on paper. A flag handed to the army does not get walked back.
Why Now, And Not In The Twenty Years Before
Those guns were never only Iraqi. They stood on Tehran’s money, Tehran’s weapons, and the promise Tehran would back them in a fight. The war just took all three. The factions face a real choice for the first time: fold into the state, or stand on a sponsor that can no longer cover them. Sadr folded first. The holdouts demanding foreign troops leave before they disarm are betting on a backer that is broke.
The Same Week, On Five Fronts
• Hormuz – Britain and France finished a 15-nation plan to clear the mines from the strait the day a US-Iran deal is signed.
• Iran’s nuclear file – Trump said there is no reason to retrieve the enriched uranium, that it is entombed. The ask moved from surrender the stockpile to leave it buried.
• Cuba – Treasury sanctioned President Diaz-Canel, his wife, the Castro family, and GAESA, the military company that owns the island’s economy.

• Venezuela – crude exports hit 1.25 million barrels a day in May, up 61 percent on a year ago, the highest in over 7 years.
• Washington – a new acting intelligence director, 5 foreign censorship figures barred, and a commodities regulator pulled off the crypto industry it had spent years prosecuting.
The Dinar Is The Last Piece Standing
The one number that has not moved through any of this is the dinar, still pinned to the rate a captured Baghdad set.
