The Curse of Tamerlane’s Tomb: Coincidence or Reality?
According to a popular legend, when Soviet archaeologists opened the tomb of Tamerlane, they allegedly discovered a warning inscription:
“Whoever disturbs my resting place will unleash a spirit of war more terrible than the world has ever seen.”
The expedition took place on June 20, 1941. Just two days later, Operation Barbarossa began – N--i Germany launched its invasion of the Soviet Union.
This coincidence gave rise to numerous mystical interpretations of the so-called “Curse of Tamerlane.” Supporters of this theory believe that opening the tomb may have been an omen of one of the most devastating wars in human history.
In December 1942, Tamerlane’s remains were ceremonially reburied according to Muslim traditions. Shortly afterward, the Soviet counteroffensive during the Battle of Stalingrad gained momentum. Advocates of the mystical theory regard this as the moment when the “curse” was lifted.
Whether coincidence or not, the story of the “Curse of Tamerlane” remains one of the most famous mystical legends of the 20th century.
