BOSTON, DID YOU HEAR THAT?!
Earlier today, the entire region was shaken by a massive BOOM. Windows rattled, houses vibrated, and people rushed outside in panic. Many feared it was an explosion, a terrorist attack, or even an earthquake.
But it wasn’t human-made. It was space knocking on our door.
A huge bolide (meteor) entered Earth’s atmosphere at tremendous speed east of Boston. The GOES-19 satellite captured a blinding flash so bright that the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) initially identified it as a massive lightning strike. The problem? There were no thunderstorms anywhere in the area.
No earthquakes – the USGS confirmed that. No industrial explosions. No fires. No casualties. Just the powerful sonic boom from a bolide airburst high in the atmosphere. A classic airburst event.
People across Massachusetts and Rhode Island reported hearing and feeling it. Many described the sound as “a jet aircraft exploding in the sky.”
It’s a reminder of both how vulnerable we are and how beautiful the universe can be. Around 100 tons of meteoritic material fall to Earth every day, but events this bright and this loud are rare – especially in broad daylight.
