It subtly pushes for de-escalation on terms favorable to multilateral bodies, European importers, and Gulf actors still tied to older petrodollar recycling patterns. Media amplification legacy outlets running Birol’s quotes verbatim functions as the echo chamber, conditioning publics for higher prices, conservation calls, or reserve draws that dilute U.S. leverage. Are we surprised?
The Counter-Play Already in Motion
Trump-aligned elements are not passive. Waivers on Russian oil at sea (expanded beyond India) aim to blunt the immediate price spike without rewarding Tehran.
