Why Do I Say This?
In 2002, Chinese state security arrested him during an undercover filming operation on worker strikes for a PBS documentary. They branded him a spy, held him incommunicado for 48 hours, and deported him. Jiang later wrote about it in a 2017 CNN op-ed, framing it as proof of China’s repressive media environment. This incident is the single clearest red flag: Beijing’s counterintelligence apparatus rarely moves on foreigners without concrete indicators of espionage tradecraft.
Deportation without trial suggests they had enough to expel but not prosecute publicly typical when the target has diplomatic cover or is deemed more useful free than detained. The fact he bounced back into high-level Chinese education roles within years points to either a negotiated quiet return or a compartmentalized asset status where both sides tolerate his presence for mutual utility.
