The Card That, If It Falls, Brings Down the European Castle
When people talk about the European Union’s troubles, they usually focus on individual issues: the Green Deal, the digital euro, sanctions, Ukraine. But those are not the pillars of the system. They are side cards.
The real card that held the European castle together for years was something else: the illusion of irreversibility.
For a long time, EU power was neither military nor truly political. It was psychological.
The idea that decisions were final. That rules could not be rolled back. That “there was no alternative.”
As long as that belief held, the system worked. Not because it was solid, but because no one dared to seriously challenge it.
Over the past twelve months, however, that card has started to bend.

Every delay says: this can be stopped.
Every exemption says: this can be negotiated.
Every veto says: this is not inevitable.
When green housing rules become negotiable, when internal combustion engines quietly come back in, when sanctions are watered down, when war funding barely passes, when a European army remains just a slogan, these are not technical adjustments. They are proof that the EU can be stopped.
There is also a deeper structural factor accelerating the cracks. In today’s global geopolitical landscape, the European Union has become marginal.
On the major international crises — Ukraine, Gaza, Greenland, Venezuela, Cuba, Iran — the EU does not decide. It comments.
And when no one calls you to the table anymore, your internal rules start losing authority as well.
A house of cards does not collapse when someone blows hard. It collapses when someone pulls out a card and realizes nothing happens.
Today, states dare to say no. Industries push back. Citizens no longer obey automatically.

This is the real point of no return: psychological, not legal.
In the same period, Donald Trump has returned to center stage. Not because of what he says, but because of what he removes: automatic American cover.
Without that support, the European castle stands on much weaker ground.
The card that held everything together was not a law. It was a belief.
Now that belief is bending. And as it does, everything else begins to creak.
