Those are the words that close the last significant chapter of the Memoirs of Billy Shears a ‘fictional’ account of the inner life and events of the artist who, due to his sudden demise, was offered the part of replacing Paul McCartney, and this will be review of same – now that I have finished it. I will be reviewing as if it is a real bio and not the ‘fiction’ it is necessarily (for sound legal reasons) pitched as.

I want to keep this brief so here goes. This has everything you could possibly want from such a memoir. It does get dark because the story of both parties is not all roses and light. It has a very positive, enlightened outlook to share as well as small asides about the separation (evolved from those still learning) supposed to be the big event in our future that is being dangled by narrative sharers in niches netwide.

It has a busload more besides and none of it disappointing – much to bathe the curious mind in and satisfy virtually all questions that might arise. One discovery you are going to make should you opt for a copy is Bill (replacement Paul) has a mind with a vast range and store of knowledge centering around the spiritual/philosophic, along with tributary strands that touch briefly and insightfully on all kinds of topics relating to the text – particularly the world as a construct.

The text itself does bring up the original Paul an awful lot (an awful lot) because of a (rather odd seeming) metaphysical tie in. So much so that at some point I wanted to exclaim ‘Get a room already! Enough!’ but that might just be me.

I have one further criticism that might only apply to me, but because I suspect it might not I am sharing.

 Before I do I want to say one thing well worth saying.

No criticism of any kind would be possible without this work of ‘fiction’ existing and beyond any problem I may have with it, it needs must be said and clearly: I am profoundly glad and grateful that it does exist so that we have a window into this powerfully interesting, historically fascinating period, person and situation. So for the honesty, guts and time it must have taken…

Well flipping done and thank you.

Now here is the criticism. The book is encoded. What this means in effect is that the pleasurable process whereby the reader enjoys the ‘engagement or union of minds’ that naturally happens when reading a text, polished or otherwise, doesn’t occur, or if it does (and has) it wears the mind in the process.

It is a bit like going on a journey where the vehicle stops, starts and judders at suprising moments. So there are jarrs like: needless repetition, chopped up or artificial seeming flow, and compressed phrasing, which of course you are aware is only there so the text fits a certain required pattern. 

Again this might just be me, but I don’t think so …

The book claims to be The Sergeant Pepper of all books (that album being a lever intended to move the world) and in terms of its ‘revolutionary’ content, you can in many ways see why… It houses all kinds of amazing revelations, many if you are a spiritual researcher you have probably met before, but as a package, along with everything else – fair claim. 

Anyway a little self promotion does no harm and if anyone has earned the right to bandy that album around as a metaphor, it would most definitely be the voice of this book.

But in my estimation the book that is fated to outsell it and be the definitive volume on the topic, lodged on all interested parties shelves) is the one written by the objective researcher/analyst who presents the un-encoded, naturally flowing, reader friendly overview of its contents, complete with their own cogent thoughts/reflections

But whether this happens soon or ever is a matter for the future (I think it will). In the meantime there is the source material and I can definitely vouch it’s well worth every moment spent with it.
