Trump’s America First Overhaul: U.S. Pulls Plug on 66 Global Entities in Multilateralism Meltdown
In a sweeping assertion of national sovereignty, the Trump administration has initiated a major pullback from the international stage, announcing the withdrawal from 66 organizations worldwide.
This move, executed via an executive order signed by President Trump on January 7, 2026, targets entities deemed inefficient, biased toward “woke” agendas, or detrimental to U.S. interests.
While the U.S. maintains its core membership in pivotal bodies like the United Nations Security Council, the decision affects 31 UN-affiliated agencies and 35 independent international groups, sparking concerns over diminished global collaboration on critical issues like climate action, public health, and labor rights.
The White House framed the withdrawals as a necessary purge of “redundant and mismanaged” institutions that prioritize foreign agendas over American prosperity.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized in a statement that many of these bodies have been “captured by actors advancing anti-U.S. priorities,” including those promoting diversity initiatives or climate policies viewed as overreaching.
This aligns with Trump’s longstanding “America First” doctrine, building on prior exits from organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Human Rights Council, UNESCO, and the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
Key departures include the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)—the foundational treaty for global climate efforts like the Paris Agreement, which Trump previously abandoned—and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), criticized by Republicans for alleged ties to coercive reproductive practices, despite a 2022 State Department review debunking such claims.

Non-UN entities on the chopping block encompass the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation, the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, and the Global Counterterrorism Forum, among others focused on migration, timber trade, and cultural affairs.
Experts warn that this isolationist stance could undermine worldwide progress on pressing challenges. “It’s a ‘take it or leave it’ approach to diplomacy,” noted Daniel Forti of the International Crisis Group, highlighting how the U.S. is dictating terms rather than engaging collaboratively.
Climate advocates like former White House adviser Gina McCarthy called the UNFCCC exit “embarrassing and shortsighted,” arguing it forfeits U.S. influence over massive investments and leaves the nation vulnerable to escalating disasters fueled by global warming, such as wildfires and floods.
UN officials have voiced disappointment, noting a lack of official notification and affirming that the U.S. remains obligated to settle outstanding dues.
The ripple effects are already evident: previous funding cuts under Trump led to program reductions and project shutdowns in partner NGOs, straining global responses to crises.
Yet, administration officials counter that resources will be redirected toward U.S.-aligned initiatives, particularly in areas of competition with China, like telecommunications and maritime standards.
This selective engagement signals a recalibrated foreign policy prioritizing bilateral deals and economic leverage over broad multilateral frameworks.

As Trump ramps up assertive actions elsewhere—including military maneuvers in Venezuela and bold claims on Greenland—this latest retreat underscores a transformative era in U.S. global relations, one that prioritizes sovereignty but risks alienating allies and amplifying isolation.
