Twin Towering Blazes Light Up Minnesota Sky: “Accidental” Pipeline Explosion Rocks Willow River Area
Today, around 1:43 p.m. CST, a Northern Natural Gas transmission pipeline ruptured in a rural area west of Willow River, Pine County, Minnesota.
The rupture caused a powerful explosion, creating two massive towering fireballs/columns of flame and thick black smoke visible for miles. The blasts were heard and felt miles away, shaking homes, and prompted a flood of 911 calls.
Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. The pipeline section was quickly isolated and gas flow shut off, bringing the flames under control within a couple of hours (no active fire threat remained by late afternoon).
- No injuries or casualties reported.
- No criminal activity or foul play suspected — officials describe it as an “accidental industrial incident” (exact cause still under investigation).
- Service restoration could take several days for hundreds of residents
