“I followed John to the counter and watched as he removed coins from a plastic tube. They were silver dollars from across many eras: a 1921 Peace Dollar, an 1893 Morgan Dollar from the Carson City mint, a Trade Dollar from 1876, a Seated Liberty Dollar from 1841, a 1800 Draped Bust Dollar, and many others. This I know because the dealer announced each of the coins as he inspected them with a loop. When he was done he consulted a little red book, then made an offer of one thousand dollars. John accepted and asked for a hundred in fives, the rest in big bills. We left with the cash in a white envelope. John zipped it away in his flight suit. His get-up looked more like a fashion statement in this era than anything functional. It fit right in with the loose and free vibes in the air. And being 1975, the funds he just pocketed were going to go a hell of a lot farther than they would in 2024.”
– Alias John Titor – Chapter Four: 1975
Coins in photo: Left to right (some dates approximations): Athenian Owl (450-425 BC), Alexander Tetradrachm (Lifetime: Macedon- 336-323 BC), Thrace Alexander Tetradrachm (100 BC), Tyrian Shekel (4/5 AD, Biblical “thirty pieces of silver”), Spanish Potosi Cob (“Piece of Eight” – late 1590’s), 1611 Mansfeld Thaler (Origin of “Dollar”), 1778 Spanish 8 Reales (Spanish Milled Dollar), 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar, 1800 Draped Bust Dollar, 1841 Seated Liberty Dollar, 1876 Trade Dollar, 1893 Morgan Dollar (Carson City), 1921 Peace Dollar.
With silver blowing up and moving towards 100 dollars an ounce (a subject discussed in the novel Alias John Titor: Time-travel and the 2024 Election) it now seems an appropriate time to take a deep dive into the history of silver as both a monetary unit and an industrial input.
