Poor Ukraine and its President, Volodymyr Zelensky (whose term of office ended in May 2024) … they don’t stand a chance now that US President Trump has decided to embark on new wars of his own. Trump holds the distinction, by the way, of becoming the first US President to bomb seven countries in a single year. Trump’s challenge to one NATO and European Union nation (Denmark, over Greenland) proves that he has no regard for the alliance or Europe’s problems. The US is a rogue nation, even among its NATO counterparts.
Ukraine was never Trump’s war and (let’s credit him where that credit is due) he refused to buy into that one.
Barack Obama was President of the United States in 2014 when the legitimate (democratically-elected) government of Ukraine was overthrown in a violent military coup. That’s when the conflict began. Eight years before the beginning of Russia’s “invasion.”
I don’t believe the US intended a war with Russia then. They wanted to humiliate Russia by overthrowing the government of a country in Russia’s sphere of influence, annex that country into the NATO alliance, and push NATO further toward Russia. I believe the US thought Russia would simply back down. Russia, under a strong leader, stood up to the United States.
It was the European countries that turned the Ukrainian conflict into a proxy war between the US and Canada. And President Joe Biden, out of weakness, allowed that to happen.
President Trump is just trying to claw back some of America’s lost dignity with his recent overthrow of the government of Venezuela, and his claims that Cuba, Colombia, and Greenland are next to follow.
Now, if only the rest of the world would simply go along with his plan …
