Giorgia Meloni’s statement (“rest now, because next year will be worse”) is neither a joke nor an outburst: it is an internal signal. She is not speaking to voters, but to the state. It is an admission that Europe’s material, financial, and political limits are coming to an end, with 2026 as the point of collision.
But there is another level: Meloni’s role in Trump’s strategy.
Meloni is currently the only European leader who is fully interoperable with Trump’s camp. Not because she openly breaks with Brussels, but because she occupies a pivotal position: she remains formally within the EU-NATO architecture while preparing Italy for a realignment when Washington changes its stance.
Trump has never seen Ukraine as an ‘existential’ war, but as an industrially unsustainable and strategically ill-placed conflict. His line is clear: close, freeze, offload the costs onto Europe. To do this, Europe needs governments capable of: withstanding the transition without collapsing politically; speaking the language of sovereignty without proclaiming premature ruptures; prepare public opinion for the “after,” not the “relaunch.”
Meloni is doing exactly that.
When she hints that “the worst is yet to come,” she is not preparing for an escalation, but for a hard landing. She knows that:
Europe cannot win this war industrially;
finance (Russian assets, loans, common debt) has replaced real production;
the United States, with or without Trump, will not absorb infinite liabilities.
In this scheme, Meloni’s Italy plays a specific role:
- a silent brake on the most destructive options (confiscation of Russian assets);
- a political bridge between continental Europe and the future American line;
- a pilot country to demonstrate that it is possible to remain in the West without committing economic s-----e.
It is no coincidence that Italy has aligned itself with Belgium, Hungary, Slovakia, and Malta against direct confiscation: this is not pro-Russian sentiment, but Trumpian realism applied to Europe.

Meloni knows that the real risk is not ‘working harder’, but losing three things at once in 2026:
Money, when the war becomes the EU budget;
Narrative, when censorship is no longer enough to cover up the numbers;
Alliance discipline, when Washington pulls out and Europe remains exposed.
Her statement marks the end of the performance. Empires announce victories; those preparing for a transition lower expectations. Meloni is not promising triumphs: she is preparing Italy for a change of phase, one in which Trump returns to the White House and Europe will have to choose whether to adapt or implode.
In summary:
Meloni is not the face of European escalation.
