Following that airplane crash in 1972, it was noted that the pilot flying Hale Boggs and Nick Begich over Portage Pass from Portage to Whittier, had written an article in Flying magazine about flying when encountering icing conditions. To find warmer air, climb higher or lower (Sea water freezes at a lower temperature than freshwater, so it may be warmer at lower elevations.) to find a warmer air mass. Speculation at the time was that he chose the wrong direction.
Having lived In Cordova, Alaska for twenty years before the Alaska Railroad tunnel was reworked to level the tracks, install a pavement surface for vehicle traffic, and larger exhaust fans, I experienced that area from a flat car riding inside a vehicle, from the new road surface with the waiting area on either end for the train to emerge, and above from an Era Aviation DH-8. Much of Prince Willian Sound’s coast consists of steep sided fjords, glaciers and snowfields, steep, deep, cold, with enough rock reefs and islets to pay attention. Whittier always felt colder than Cordova.
It’s deep enough in the sound that Japanese submarines in the north Pacific would replenish their freshwater supplies from streams in island bays during World War II. I watch John Ford’s film, Report from the Aleutians periodically (DVD), and observe that the weather remains the same today as Japanese and American forces struggled with it in the early 1940s.
Thanks again, Charlie B from tropical north Idaho…
