How to Ascend – Ascension Guide & Ascension Process by DJ
Disciple John:
Ascension means rising to higher vibration and going out of the head and into the heart, in other words merging the mind into the Heart, where Spirit of God dwells.
For my 20th birthday I experienced self-realization, liberation, enlightenment, and ascension where I experienced myself as “I am that I AM”. It lasted about 35 seconds, my friend who was present commented “your head is glowing” and as I had direct eye contact with him, I crashed back into ordinary consciousness.
I haven’t been able to ascend since them since I have a lot of shadow work to do, but I did re-trace my steps how I got there and I will share it here in 12 steps.
I learned that when we raise our vibration, by default we activate higher % of brain we use, we activate our dormant DNA strands, and align our chakras, and by merging mind into the heart, our crown chakra opens and we connect with the Consciousness of ONE.
The Process:
1. Mindfulness
2. Non-Attachment
3. Desirelessness
4. Non – Identification
5. No Mind/Meditation
6. Breath Control
7. Concentration/Focus
8. Visual Centering
9. Stillness/Silence
10. Affirmation
11. Surrender
12. Self-Enquiry
I AM here to help us align our divine mind, sacred heart and soul – for it is aligning these 3 that we begin our proper journey into ascension.
You will master the feeling of being in complete alignment, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

1. MINDFULNESS.
Mindfulness is the opposite of mindlessness.
It means waking up out of autopilot and ‘taking the steering wheel’ of our attention again.
______________________________________________________
We practice mindfulness by maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations and the surrounding environment.
Mindfulness also involves non-judgment, meaning that we pay attention to our thoughts and feelings with the attitude of an impartial witness — without believing them or taking them personally.
Complete mindfulness – meaning you are aware of your inner as well as your outer expressions of your beingness – is a Divine state of living.
Mindfulness is the state of complete awareness, reached through willingness to set aside all ego and sensory temptations – the pull of old patterns – to take up your position in the center of your Being, where you are in absolute command of all you think, feel and do.
– Master the feeling of being in complete alignment, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
– Practice monitoring your inner mental-emotional state.
– Always have some of your attention in the inner energy field of your body.
– Be in tune with your body, thoughts, and feelings.
– Ask yourself: What’s going on inside me at this moment?
— — — — — — —
2. DESIRELESSNESS
Earthly attachment blocks cosmic energy.
Small desires such as the desire to eat, drink, sleep and attend to calls of nature, though these may also be classed among desires, you can safely satisfy. They will not implant vasanas in your mind, necessitating further birth. Those activities are just necessary to carry on life and are not likely to develop or leave behind vasanas or tendencies. As a general rule, therefore, there is no harm in satisfying a desire where the satisfaction will not lead to further desires by creating vasanas in the mind.
If a desire can be got rid of by satisfying it, there will be no harm in satisfying such a desire. But desires generally are not eradicated by satisfaction. Trying to root them out that way is like trying to quench a fire by pouring inflammable spirits on it. At the same time, the proper remedy is not forcible suppression, since such repression is bound to react sooner or later into a forceful surging up of desires with undesirable consequences. The proper way to get rid of a desire is to find out `Who gets the desire? What is its source?’ When this is found, the desire is rooted out and it will never again emerge or grow.
Desirelessness is Wisdom. The two are not different: they are the same.
Desirelessness is refraining from turning the mind towards any object. Wisdom means appearance of no object.

In other words, not seeking what is other than the Self is detachment or desirelessness; not leaving the Self is wisdom.
Who gets the desire? what is its source?
— — — — — — —
3. NON-ATTACHMENT:
We are wrongly persisting in unreality, that is, attachment to thoughts and worldly activities.
We have to remove the association with the objects of the world. When that worldly association is removed the attachment or tendencies of the mind will be destroyed. Those who are devoid of mental attachment will perish in that which is motionless.
A man attached to desires cannot get solitude wherever he may be, whereas a detached man is always in solitude.
Solitude is in the mind of man. One might be in the thick of the world and maintain serenity of mind. Such a one is in solitude. Another may stay in a forest, but still be unable to control his mind. Such a man cannot be said to be in solitude. Solitude is a function of the mind.
There is solitude everywhere. The individual is solitary always. His business is to find it out within, not to seek it outside himself.
As thoughts arise they should be destroyed then and there in the very place of their origin.
As thoughts arise, destroying them utterly without any residue in the very place of their origin is Non – Attachment!
Just as the pearl-diver ties a stone to his waist, sinks to the bottom of the sea and there takes the pearls, so each one of us should be endowed with non-attachment, dive within oneself and obtain the Self-Pearl.
— — — — — — —
4. NON-IDENTIFICATION:
If you give attention to arising thoughts of the ego, then you are identifying with thoughts and ego.
Where our attention goes, energy flows.
Ego loses it’s power if you stop energizing it through your attention.
Learn to disidentify from your mind, every time you create a gap in the stream of mind, the Light of your consciousness grows stronger.

______________________________________________________
The present state of ignorance is due to the identification of consciousness with the insentient body.
The truth is that from the Self the ego rises up, confuses itself with the body, identifies itself with the mind and mistakes the world to be real.
As soon as one ceases to imagine that one is an individual person, inhabiting a particular body, the whole superstructure of wrong ideas collapses and is replaced by a conscious and permanent awareness of the real Self.
The ghostly ego
which is devoid of form comes into existence
by grasping a form; grasping a form it endures;
feeding upon forms which it grasps it waxes more;
leaving one form it grasps another form,
but when sought for it takes to flight.
If you seek the ego you will find that it does not exist. That is the way to destroy it.
The fact is, you are ignorant of your blissful state. Ignorance supervenes and draws a veil over the pure Self which is Bliss. Attempts are directed only to remove this veil of ignorance which is merely wrong knowledge. The wrong knowledge is the false identification of the Self with the body and the mind.
This False identification must go, and then the Self alone remains.
The real Self is there in the Heart behind the jiva or ego-self.
The perception of `I’ is associated with a form, maybe the body. There should be nothing associated with the pure Self. The Self is the unassociated, pure reality, in whose light the body and the ego shine. On stilling all thoughts the pure consciousness remains.
Just on waking from sleep and before becoming aware of the world there is that pure `I, I’. Hold on to it without sleeping or without allowing thoughts to possess you. If that is held firm it does not matter even if the world is seen. The seer remains unaffected by the phenomena.
What is the ego? Enquire. The body is insentient and cannot say `I’. The Self is pure consciousness and non-dual. It cannot say `I’. No one says `I’ in sleep. What is the ego then? It is something intermediate between the inert body and the Self. It has no locus standi. If sought for it vanishes like a ghost. At night a man may imagine that there is a ghost by his side because of the play of shadows. If he looks closely he discovers that the ghost is not really there, and what he imagined to be a ghost was merely a tree or a post. If he does not look closely the ghost may terrify him. All that is required is to look closely and the ghost vanishes. The ghost was never there. So also with the ego. It is an intangible link between the body and pure consciousness. It is not real. So long as one does not look closely at it, it continues to give trouble. But when one looks for it, it is found not to exist.
There is another story which illustrates this. In Hindu marriage functions the feasts often continue for five or six days. On one of these occasions a stranger was mistaken for the best man by the bride’s party and they therefore treated him with special regard. Seeing him treated with special regard by the bride’s party, the bridegroom’s party considered him to be some man of importance related to the bride’s party and therefore they too showed him special respect. The stranger had altogether a happy time of it. He was also all along aware of the real situation. On one occasion the groom’s party wanted to refer to him on some point and so they asked the bride’s party about him. Immediately he scented trouble and made himself scarce. So it is with the ego. If looked for, it disappears. If not, it continues to give trouble.

No one can escape from illusions unless he looks at them, for not looking is the way they are protected.
When other thoughts arise, one should not pursue them, but should inquire: to whom do they arise?
(LOCUS STANDI – “”a right to appear in a court or before any body on a given question : a right to be heard””)

5. NO-MIND:
No-Mind is consciousness without thought. You are Present in moment, in the now, you are highly alert and aware but not thinking. Your mind is still.
No Mind is when you turn off your mind, in other words, switch off your thinking.
No mind is when you literally think of nothing. No thoughts of any kind. No Mind is consciousness without thought. You are present in the moment – Now. You are fully awake, highly alert and aware, but you are not thinking. Your mind is completely silent and still.
All kinds of thought arise in meditation. That is
only right; for what lies hidden in you is brought
out. Unless it rises up, how can it be destroyed?
Thoughts rise up spontaneously, as it were, but only
to be extinguished in due course, thus strengthening
the mind.
As long as there are enemies within the fortress, they will continue to sally forth; if they are destroyed as they emerge, the fortress will fall into our hands.
Meditation is your true nature. You call it
meditation now, because there are other thoughts
distracting you. When these thoughts are dispelled,
you remain alone — that is, in the state of
meditation free from thoughts; and that is your
real nature, which you are now trying to gain by
keeping away other thoughts. Such keeping away
of other thoughts is now called meditation. But
when the practice becomes firm, the real nature
shows itself as true meditation.
The mind is nothing other than the `I’-thought. The mind and the ego are one and the same. The other mental faculties such as the intellect and the memory are only this. Mind, intellect, the storehouse of mental tendencies, and ego; all these are only the one mind itself. This is like different names being given to a man according to his different functions. The individual soul is nothing but this soul or ego.
Through the present moment you have access to the power of life itself, that which has traditionally been called “God”.
Being one with life is being one with Now.
– If you start to think and lose control, then ask yourself are you present in the moment? By asking yourself, you bring yourself in the moment.

6. BREATH-CONTROL:
Breath control is only an aid for diving deep within oneself. One may as well dive down by controlling the mind. When the mind is controlled, the breath is controlled automatically. One need not attempt breath control, mind control is enough. Breath control is only recommended for those who cannot control their minds straightaway.
Because breath has no form as such, it has since ancient times been equated with spirit the formless one Life. “God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living creature.” The German word for breathing – atmen – is derived from the ancient Indian (Sanskrit) word Atman, meaning the indwelling divine spirit or God within.
Now, everyone, breathe deeply. Deeply, deeply. Breathe into the deepest place in your heart, further than you’ve ever been before. Breathe into the secret room in your heart, where the connection to your soul is. And there you connect All That Is. Feel the depth of that connection. Once you forge that, in your heart, it can never be broken. And once you forge that connection, you know that you can never be alone, and you can never die. You go on, as does everyone else. All of us, together, create All That Is.
Now breathe deeply. Feel that place in your heart, where there is no boundary, there is no barrier, there is no separation. When you go to that place, you feel the electromagnetic energy, of all those beings around you, of all the beings that have ever lived, of all the consciousness in the Universe today, this moment. All consciousness, past, future, present. And through it all, the great loving energy of Prime Creator. In that state, you are God, you are Love, you are Light. Feel the depth of that connection.
Breathe deeply. Send that Love that you feel in your heart down into the Earth. Connect, deeply, right into the center of your dear Mother Earth, that is your anchor, that will steady and maintain you always. And now upward, through your crown chakra, reach, up through the Pillar of Light, up through all the layers of all the dimensions, to our great Creator. There is no barrier, no disconnection, you are always connected, able to experience, able to feel our Creator, to absorb pure Love that is so nurturing, so comforting, so peaceful. In this state, beloved ones, you can create anything.
— — — — — — —
7. CONCENTRATION
Blessed are the Self-centered, for they shall know God
Any consideration about the seat of the Self is theoretical if you fix your attention on a place in the body. You consider yourself as the subject, the seer, and the place where you fix your attention becomes the object seen. This is merely mental imagery. When, on the contrary, you see the seer himself, you merge in the Self and you become one with it. That is the Heart.
The Self is the Heart, Self-Luminous. Illumination arises from the heart and reaches the brain, which is the seat of the mind. The world is seen with the mind; so you see the world by the reflected light of the Self.
If concentration is made with the brain, sensations of heat and headache ensue. Concentration has to be made with the Heart, which is cool and refreshing.
When the room is dark a lamp is necessary to illumine and eyes to cognize objects. But when the sun has risen there is no need of a lamp to see objects. To see the sun no lamp is necessary, it is enough that you turn your eyes towards the self-luminous sun.
Similarly with the mind. To see objects the reflected light of the mind is necessary. To see the Heart it is enough that the mind is turned towards it. Then mind loses itself and Heart shines forth.

Mentally take interest in one thing and fix the mind on it. Let such interest be all-absorbing to the exclusion of everything else. This is dispassion and concentration.
Concentrating one’s thoughts solely on the Self will lead to happiness or bliss.
The mind, turned outwards, results in thoughts and objects. Turned inwards, it becomes itself the Self.
Concentrating on the Heart is the same as concentrating on the Self.
All that you see is false and the Seer alone is true.
Concentrate on the Seer, not on the seen.
Not on the objects, but on the light which reveals them.
What is important is steadfast resolve. It does not make much difference if you concentrate on the top of the nose, the centre of the eyebrows [or sound of the mantra], and so on. The really important thing is to pay attention to the Source of [perception or] the mantra, [to the “I” that hears the mantra or perceives the objects of concentration]. Keep your attention fixed on that.

8. VISUAL CENTERING:
Whenever particular things are perceived, the enquiry
“Who is it that sees them”?
should be made; they will then disappear at once.
– Working It Out
Describing the give-and-take of a therapy session is something like trying to capture the action of tennis match in words. However, I will attempt here to highlight the main points, to give readers a general picture of how the work is done.
Let’s pretend we’re in an individual session. We sit facing each other directly, looking into each other eyes. (You might try looking at your eyes in hand mirror) Let’s begin with the following exercise:
Picture your eyes, working like a film camera. The camera’s lens is like the lens of your eye. It brings the picture in, sending it back into the camera (your brain) where it is recorded on the film. Thus, we do not see with our eyes; we see with our brain. The image travels along the optic nerve into the brain where we place meaning on what we see, record, cross-reference and store it.

______________________________________________________
Now, breathe so you feel yourself breathing, taking the oxygen in, feeling the tingling sensation along the passageways as you breathe. Continue to breathe comfortably and fully. Feel yourself in the center of your brain, pulling the oxygen in you. Bring it in through your eyes, along the optic nerve and into the center where you experience “I.” You are there, safe and sound, inside yourself. Like the pilot in the cockpit, you have instant access to all your senses, memory, reflexes and library of knowledge.
Choose something neutral at eye level to look at. Now, pull back, back, until you feel yourself putting more distance between you and the thing you are looking at. Feel yourself moving back, the way a TV camera moves back on a dolly, allowing a greater field of vision. There, in the center of your brain, you will find a new delight=your “funny bone.” (It’s not in your elbow. It’s in the center of your brain.)
Continue practicing the breathing and pulling back until you feel your center of gravity and the channel of your inner being align, north to south, earth to sky, with you as the channel through which light energy flows. You, in your truest innermost eternal consciousness, are an integral part of the flow of life which goes beyond our usual understanding of time and space. We are an integral part a Universe we cannot imagine with our finite brains. What we do matters, and the energy we put out when we interact with others is an important part of our contribution to that Universe. We do reap what we sow, and what we sow is the sum of all the interactions of our individual and collective lifetimes.
Continue your practice, every day if possible, using this and other exercises in the book until you “drop in” to what some people have called “The Zone.” We always see the same response: smiling, laughter, occasionally irrepressible giggles. Here in the center of your brain, everything takes on a slightly amusing cast.
Once there, you reach the astonishing truth: It is impossible to be here, alive and free, and be depressed or anxious. Thoughtful, if necessary, but depressed, never. Here. breathing is fun. Seeing is fun. Feeling is fun. Life is worth living.
— — — — — — —
9. SILENCE (stillness):
Language is only a medium for communicating one’s thoughts to another. It is called in only after thoughts arise. Other thoughts arise after the `I’-thought rises and so the `I’-thought is the root of all conversation. When one remains without thinking one understands another by means of the universal language of silence.
Silence is ever-speaking. It is a perennial flow of language which is interrupted by speaking. These words I am speaking obstruct that mute language. For example, there is electricity flowing in a wire. With resistance to its passage, it glows as a lamp or revolves as a fan. In the wire it remains as electric energy. Similarly also, silence is the eternal flow of language, obstructed by words.
What one fails to know by conversation extending to several years can be known instantly in silence.
That state which transcends speech and thought is
mauna (Silence); it is meditation without mental activity.
Subjugation of the mind is meditation; deep
meditation is eternal speech. Silence is ever-speaking;
it is the perennial flow of ‘language’. It is interrupted
by speaking; for words obstruct this mute ‘language’.
Lectures may entertain individuals for hours without
improving them. Silence, on the other hand, is
permanent and benefits the whole of humanity. . . .
. . By silence, eloquence is meant. Oral lectures are
not so eloquent as silence. Silence is unceasing
eloquence. . . . It is the best language.
There is a state when words cease and silence prevails.
Remaining quiet is what is called wisdom-Insight. To remain quiet is to resolve the mind in the Self.
For those who live in Self as the beauty devoid of thought, there is nothing which should be thought of. That which should be adhered to is only the experience of silence, because in that supreme state nothing exists to be attained other than oneself.
The Self alone is real. All other are unreal. The mind and intellect do not remain apart from you. The Bible says, “Be still and know that I AM God.” Stillness is the sole requisite for the realization of the Self as God.
______________________________________________________
The Self is God. ‘I AM’ is God. If God be apart from the Self, He must be a Selfless God, which is absurd. All that is required to realise the Self is to be still.
Know that the consciousness which always shines in the heart as the formless self, ‘I’, and which is known by one’s being still without thinking about anything is perfect reality.
This knowledge of oneself will be revealed only to the consciousness which is silent, clear and free from the activity of the agitated and suffering mind.
Your duty is to be and not, to be this or that.
‘I AM THAT I AM’ sums up the whole truth; the method is summarised in ‘be still’.
And what does stillness mean? It means ‘destroy yourself ’; because, every name and form is the cause of trouble.
‘I-I’ is the Self. ‘I am this’ is the ego. When the ‘I’ is kept up as the ‘I’ only, it is the Self. When it flies off at a tangent and says ‘I am this or that, I am such and such’, it is the ego.
Silence, which is devoid of the assertive ego, alone is liberation.
The inner silence is self-surrender. And that is living without the sense of ego.
Practice silence until nothing else – but light – remains.
Align with silence and be still.
— — — — — — —
10. AFFIRMATION:
God is light and in Him there is no darkness. 1 John 1:5
Energy is in everything; God is in everything; Life is in everything. God is what science calls Energy. Energy is what religion calls God.
Words have power. Unique vibration and frequency. Words are energy forms.
We can describe energy in many ways. We can call some frequencies of it sound. Others we call light. Some are heat. Some are thought. Some radio. Some electricity. But it’s all frequency and it’s all what we call Light. It is just a spectrum of frequency if you can imagine that. Inside and around your body you have your own individual energy field of Light. And you are Light!
I ask you to use your God-Given Light against wicked dark beings who are embodiment of evil, greed, hate, and those who feed of fear of innocent beings and seek to destroy all that is good in life!
Affirmations are statements where you assert that what you want to be true is true.
The most influential are affirmations of Truth. Every honest and positive word is complete truth. It is important that the emotions of Love, Joy and other pleasant feelings be present while you are affirming. Light of your Soul is Love, Peace, Beauty, Success, Harmony, Intelligence, Knowledge, Wisdom, Grace, Courage, Determination, Loyalty, Power, Strength, Happines, Health, Perfection, Youth, Vitality, Abundance and everything else that is good, positive, healthy and wealthy. With these words you should assemble your affirmations… “I AM …. “
Oral Affirmation consists of sounds. The sounds arise from thoughts, for one must think before one expresses the thoughts in words. The thoughts are from the mind. Therefore mental affirmation is better than oral affirmation.
Acute diseases will not be cured merely by repeating the name of the medicine but only by drinking the medicine. Similarly, the bonds of birth and death will not cease merely by doing many repetitions of affirmations such as `I am God’. Instead of wandering about repeating `I am the supreme’, abide as the supreme yourself.
The misery of birth and death will not cease by vocally repeating countless times `I am that’, but only by abiding as that.
One should not use the name of God mechanically
and superficially without the feeling of devotion.
To use the name of God one must call upon Him
with yearning and unreservedly surrender oneself to
Him. Only after such surrender is the name of God
constantly with the man.
Illuminate yourself by affirming I Am Love, I Am Light.
By affirming I am Love & Light, you are affirming Truth.
This affirming raises your vibrations and liberates you. These words align you with your Self and God.
Most significant and powerful affirmation
– I Am Love & Light –
I AM the Light of my Concsiousnes.
I AM the Love of my Being.~Jan
I am One with All

11. SURRENDER:
Surrender the mind to the Heart.~Jan
Q: How can the rebellious mind be made calm and
tranquil?
A: Either see its source so that it may disappear, or
surrender yourself so that it may be struck down.
Self-surrender is the same as Self-knowledge, and
either of them necessarily implies self-control. The
ego submits only when it recognises the
Higher Power.
Surrender appears easy because people imagine that, once they say with their lips `I surrender’ and put their burdens on their Lord, they can be free and do what they like. But the fact is that you can have no likes or dislikes after your surrender; your will should become completely non-existent, the Lord’s will taking its place. The death of the ego in this way brings about a state which is not different from realization. So by whatever path you may go, you must come to realization or oneness.
The present difficulty is that man thinks he is the doer. But it is a mistake. It is the higher power which does everything and man is only a tool. If he accepts that position he is free from troubles, otherwise he courts them. Take, for instance, the sculpted figure at the base of a gopuram [temple tower], which is made to appear as if it is bearing the burden of the tower on its shoulder. Its posture and look are a picture of great strain which gives the impression that it is bearing the weight of the tower. But think. The tower is built on the earth and it rests on its foundations. The figure is a part of the tower, but it is made to look as if it is bearing the weight of the tower. Is it not funny ? So also is the man who takes on himself the sense of doing.
Surrender once for all and be done with the desire. So long as the sense of doership is retained there is the desire. That is also personality. If this goes the Self is found to shine forth pure. The sense of doership is the bondage and not the actions themselves.
`Be still and know that I am God.’ Here stillness is total surrender without a vestige of individuality. Stillness will prevail and there will be no agitation of mind. Agitation of mind is the cause of desire, the sense of doership and personality. If that is stopped there is quiet.
There `knowing’ means `being’. It is not the relative knowledge involving the triads, knowledge, knowing and known.
Q: Is surrender, by itself, sufficient to reach the Self ?
A: It is enough that one surrenders oneself. Surrender is to give oneself up to the original cause of one’s being. Do not delude
yourself by imagining such a source to be some God outside you. Your source is within yourself. Give yourself up to it. That means that you should seek the source and merge in it.
Complete surrender to God means giving up all thoughts and concentrating the mind on him. If we can concentrate on him, other thoughts disappear. If the actions of the mind, speech and body are merged with God, all the burdens of our life will be on him.
There are two ways of achieveing surrender. One is looking into the source of the ‘I’ and merging into that source. The other is feeling ‘I Am helpless myself, God alone is all powerful and exept throwing myself completely on him, there is no other means of safety for me’, and thus gradually developing the conviction that God alone exists and ego does not count. Both methods lead to the same goal. Complete surrender is another name for realization or liberation.
So, to achieve Goal of Surrender two distinct practices are recommended:
1. Holding on to the `I’-thought until the one who imagines that he is separate from God disappears.
2. Completely surrendering all responsibility for one’s life to God or the Self. For such self-surrender to be effective one must have no will or desire of one’ own and one must be completely free of the idea that there is an individual person who is capable of acting independently of God.
During worldly activity, if your attention is fixed on the fundamental Reality, there is no difficulty. But ordinary people forget the Reality and take the name alone to be real. The different “I”s are not real. There is only one “I”. The separate “I” is like a watchman in a fort. He is like the protector of the body. The real owner in everybody is only the one real “I”. So, when the separate “I” surrenders to the real “I”, then “I” and “mine” are eliminated. The true state comes into existence when, after sorting out what belongs to whom, the ego “I” surrenders itself to the real owner.
True surrender is the melting of the ego in its Source, the Heart. God is not deceived by outward acts. What he sees in the worshipper is how much of the ego remains in full control and how much is on the verge of destruction.
Surrendering to the Heart, we become the Heart, Our Higher Self.

12. SELF-ENQUIRY:
What is the essence of self–inquiry?
Essence of Inquiry is a shift of focus from the object of perception to the perceiving subject, and to remain as this formless subject.
See who is the subject; and this enquiry
leads you to pure Consciousness beyond the subject.
The normal self is the mind. This mind is with
limitations. But pure Consciousness is beyond
limitations, and is reached by investigation as above
outlined.
Note: To ask the mind to k--l the mind is like making the thief the policeman. He will go with you and pretend to catch the thief, but nothing will be gained. So you must turn inward and see from where the mind rises and then it will cease to exist.
In the enquiry “Who am I?”, the “I” is the ego. The question really means, what is the source or origin of this ego?
Personality-idea or thought is also the root or the stem of all other thoughts, since each idea or thought arises only as someone’s thought and is not known to exist independently of the ego. The ego therefore exhibits thought activity. The second and the third persons [he, you, that, etc.] do not appear except to the first person [I]. Therefore they arise only after the first person appears, so all the three persons seem to rise and sink together. Trace, then, the ultimate cause of `I’ or personality.
From where does this `I’ arise? Seek for it within; it then vanishes. This is the pursuit of wisdom. When the mind unceasingly investigates its own nature, it transpires that there is no such thing as mind. This is the direct path for all. The mind is merely thoughts. Of all thoughts the thought `I’ is the root. Therefore the mind is only the thought `I’.
The birth of the `I’-thought is one’s own birth, its death is the person’s death. After the `I’-thought has arisen, the wrong identity with the body arises.
Self-enquiry is really possible only through intense introversion of the mind. What is finally realised as a result of such enquiry into the source of aham vritti (‘I’ – thought), is verily the heart as the undifferentiated light of Pure Consciousness, into which the reflected light of the mind is completely absorbed.
The Self is reached by the search for the origin of the ego and by diving into the Heart. This is the direct method to Self-Realization.
Hold on to the thinker, and the thinker will then automatically sink into his source, pure consciousnesss. Seeking the ego, that is it’s source, the ego disappears. Hold on to it and it will disappear like a phantom. What remains over is the real ‘I’ and that is the Self.
From where is the ‘I’-thought? Probe into it, the ‘I’-thought will vanish, and the supreme Self will shine forth of itself.
You must distinguish between the `I’, pure in itself, and the `I’-thought. The latter, being merely a thought, sees subject and object, sleeps, wakes up, eats and thinks, dies and is reborn. But the pure `I’ is the pure being, eternal existence, free from ignorance and thought-illusion. If you stay as the `I’, your being alone, without thought, the `I’-thought will disappear and the delusion will vanish for ever. In a cinema-show you can see pictures only in a very dim light or in darkness. But when all the lights are switched on, the pictures disappear. So also in the floodlight of the supreme Atman all objects disappear.
If the mind becomes introverted through enquiry into the source of ‘I’-thought, the mental tendencies become extinct. The light of the Self falls on the tendencies and produces the phenomenon of reflection we call the mind. Thus, when the mental tendiencies become extinct the mind also disappears, being absorbed into the light of the one reality, the Heart.
This is the sum and substance of all that an aspirant needs to know. What is imperatively required of him is an earnest and one-pointed enquiry into the source of the ‘I’ Thought.
To enquire `Who am I ?’ really means trying to find out the source of the ego or the `I’-thought. The very purpose of Self-enquiry is to focus the entire mind at its source.
It is not, therefore, a case of one
‘I’ searching for another ‘I’.
Much less is Self-enquiry an empty formula, for it involves an intense activity of the entire mind to keep it steadily poised in pure Self-awareness. Self-enquiry is the one infallible means, the only direct one, to realise the unconditioned, Absolute
Being that you really are.
