Effective Immediately: The USCIS is now looking at whether immigrants are contributing to society in a positive or negative way before granting citizenship
– they just reinstated a holistic approach to evaluate good moral character (GMC) for naturalization, effective August 15, 2025.
– Evaluation Scope: Assesses GMC over 5 years (or 3 for spouses of U.S. citizens) based on overall conduct, not just specific offenses.
– Positive Actions: Community involvement, lawful work, and family caregiving are considered.
– Negative Conduct: Includes permanent bars (e.g., murder, serious crimes) and conditional bars (e.g., multiple DUIs).
The Goal: Ensures applicants show they meet community ethical standards for U.S. citizenship.
