The state of Illinois is proposing a bill for a Tax on electric vehicles for the Miles Driven as they do not pay the gasoline tax. This is the second go around as the last one enforced only lasted a week.

Other states are considering this same thing, but for now Illinois has the 2nd highest fuel tax just below California. Just to let you know is that the regular gasoline in my nearby town, 160 miles North of Los Angeles, just went below $4 per gallon, yet that is the cheap grade of gasoline and not the best for your good vehicles.

For many years the highways, roads and city streets have been paid for and maintained through the gasoline and diesel taxes, but since we have many electric vehicles they are getting away from not paying any of those road taxes.

Why do those that have home or business generators have to pay the fuel tax when they are not used on the roads? Even for lawn mowers or other tools?

We all need to think as to what is taxed and what is not as if I was from California I should not have to pay a gasoline tax to pay for the tolls on bridges or other roads for which I don’t travel. The same goes for Illinois, however I think the gasoline and diesel that is purchased in those states pays for only those state’ roads.

I think ships are fueled with diesel fuel, but they do not travel on any roads so why should they pay for road taxes?

Now being a former truck driver I was able to purchase diesel in one state and completely go straight through another state or two and not purchase fuel in those states, yet I drove on those states’ roads.

A video I saw brought up about reading the odometer in a vehicle and possibly having a transponder, or we can think we just take our vehicle in somewhere annually to have them get the reading or we send in a photo of our odometer or if we are just honest and tell them.

Are they now going to have state check points to make sure you pay for the road taxes in that state? If traveling on Route 66 in Missouri you won’t have to pay any fuel taxes there as it is only 13.5 miles long and people would get away with not paying unless they have the check points.

Will every vehicle have a transponder on them or they get the readings even though we have a non-electric vehicle, purchase fuel and pay taxes that way? Tax us anyway they can!

I guess riding on any city or tour bus your cost is built in for those taxes.

Will our Constitutional rights be violated as the transponders read more than what they are supposed to or are we to tell the government where we drive at all times and if we go outside our itinerary they can fine us more?

Like when you are stopped by the cops they ask where you have been and where you are going, where we don’t have to tell them, but some people are arrested for not complying with their orders, obstruction.

I would guess there are some calculations as to what the tax is as for the truckers the diesel tax is a higher tax as usually the trucks are heavier and the usage is more damaging to the roads.

On the other hand off road vehicles that need fuel usually don’t travel on the paved roads so why should they pay the fuel taxes, but they travel on the dirt roads where those still have to be maintained, yet I would think those off road parks are paid with other taxes.

Have you ever thought about the fuel tax for race cars as they are mostly on their own track, but now with the ‘Miles Driven’ tax the ‘Indy 500’ will have taxes placed on them for using those race cars and on their own track just to make a profit for the state.

Maybe something like the Prohibition Amendments will have to be looked at very closely as back then other types of fuels were made to fuel all vehicles and not just to stop making drinking alcohol as alcohol was used to fuel vehicles.
