There is a big misunderstanding with President Trump’s recent Executive Order banning Gain of Function Research
Let me try to help clarify…
1.) The Executive Order does not explicitly state that gain-of-function research will continue to be funded in the U.S.
It pauses certain domestic GOF research PENDING new policies and does not confirm ongoing funding for GOF research domestically.
2.) The Executive Order does not explicitly state that the U.S. will continue to fund GOF research in foreign countries.
Instead, it mandates ending federal funding for “dangerous” GOF research conducted by foreign entities in “countries of concern” (e.g., China) or in countries with inadequate oversight to meet U.S. biosafety and biosecurity standards.
However, the order does not categorically prohibit all U.S. funding for GOF research abroad.
