I have been listening to some interviews on AI recently and they have provoked a certain line of thinking, but it might take a while before I get to the kernel of what I want to say (or explore). So this might be long …
Before I head on in I want to lay the groundwork with some ready made assumptions I find useful (which you need not share as part of your own mindset, but if you can go along with them as part of this whole speculative exercise, you might then find your own path through the questions raised).
These assumptions are quite big and involve the idea of the immortality of the soul. You may already share them or something quite near them. They are presented in a series of What Ifs. Here we go …
What if: the continual ray of consciousness or awareness that is always flooding out of your body and connecting you directly with the world – through hearing, seeing, touch, taste, smell and thoughts – is God’s continual gift of Him/Herself to you that you put your particular ‘imprint’ or ‘flavour’ on – depending on your personality, how you deal with the past, your beliefs etc.
What if: this ‘gift’ will always be yours, always informing you of and connecting you with any world or realm you happen to find yourself in, either now, in reality, or in dreams or out of body experiences etc or when it becomes unlocked from your physical vehicle at your natural end here.
What if: the only way you could forfeit the foreverness of this wonderful and amazing gift would be to involve it in the kind of negative scenarios that are extremely unlikely of anyone that comes to this site to read.
What if: among the many faceted characteristics of this ‘light’ that we could isolate and speak of, one is that it is extremely intelligent/wise – certainly inasmuch as you can perfectly understand what you are reading now while factoring in and assessing its possible relevance to you, as well as other demands on your time in this ongoing moment.

What if: it is also very heartful – especially in conditions of trust – and has a beautiful emotional quality and empathy that effortlessly allows and facilitates your connection with others as well as the natural world as a matter of joy itself.
What if: it has a perfect memory of all that has happened to you, but is ‘wise’ enough to keep most of those events in the background so the more ‘conscious’ part of it, or you, can get on with things.
What if: it is inherently peaceful when left to itself – i.e. when you allow any form of self-preoccupation to die down and simply observe it doing what it does – and is never in a hurry but always has a seamless and perfect grasp on the universe and what may be occuring, all of the time.
Now, I don’t want you to get too lost in any kind of dilemma involving a false division between your awareness and ‘you’ if you do happen to be ‘borrowing’ this perspective for now. Rather see it all as ‘you’, a soul expression weaving awareness in certain indefinable ways that you have no problem recognising and calling yourself.
And why this long What If preamble describing a possible model of yourself? I will now tell you …
There is portal you are being shown that will take you to Mars – say … You step through and there you are on the red planet.
How does it work you ask … Well, (you are told) it painlessly dematerialises you here on earth and rematerialises you on Mars, it is simple. (Shades of the film The Prestige, if you have seen it …)

How ready are you to step through such a portal … ?
A little daunting isn’t it? ‘Will that really be me on Mars, or will some kind of new version of me continue life there whereas I go off into oblivion … ?’
So now you can see why I covered so much in the preamble.
If you really can be described – if only approximately – in the ways covered so far (and more, obviously, it is just a convenient model … ) you have at hand some questions and a way of phrasing them that you can pose this ‘portal guardian’ – given he or she can be trusted.
Questions like. If I go through the portal, will it be this exact same ray of awareness that is ‘me’, with all my memories, proclivities etc that I am expressing now, that will be shining out there on Mars through this same physical vehicle … Will it be like I simply stepped through a door?
‘Yes,’ now says the portal guardian, ‘it will be just like that, in fact it is that. At no point will you ever feel ‘lost’ or ‘outside’ yourself. You will always stay in command of and have a sense of a physical vehicle that does not feel different to how you’re feeling now, but you will be vanished and recreated, with such instantaneousness, there is no sense of disconnect from your body whatsoever.’
So here is the question: do you go through the portal for a Martian stroll … ? (Factoring in possible breathing app etc).
I think I would, but I am not sure … After all, where’s the hurry … Surely a trip in a fast ship has a lot going for it is as well … Certainly no ‘portal’ dilemmas there.
‘Ah,’ says the portal guardian, ‘this particular portal has a Trip in a Fast Ship simulation option so that your experience will be just that. You are simply held in a mid dimension space where the illusion of a trip is flawlessly enacted around you so you ‘disembark’ on Mars.’ (Welcome to the speculative corridors of my mind!)
I am going to abandon you here (at the portal) because raising the issues of identity in this context with the kinds of assumptions already given here was all I wanted to do at the moment. I do think this piece has something of the ‘flavour’ of the kind of issues, questions and dilemmas that will engage us more in the future.

(I should say perhaps here, I do think it is possible for a portal to exist that does not involve any such dilemmas involving ‘recreation’ but simply allows someone to go from one place to another!)
