The Black Lotus Clan – Modern Ninja Cult (Thailand/Laos Border)
Who They Are: The Black Lotus Clan is a modern ninja-inspired cult operating along the Thailand-Laos border, near the Mekong River in Chiang Khong, Thailand. Founded in 1995 by a Thai ex-monk, Somchai Phraiwan, 67, the group claims to revive ancient shinobi arts through a mix of Muay Thai, Taoist sorcery, and stolen Japanese ninjutsu manuals smuggled from Kyoto in the 1980s. They number 30 members, mostly ex-soldiers and street fighters, and are led by Somchai’s protégé, Niran Srisuk, 41, a former Thai Special Forces operative.
Abilities and Training: The Black Lotus trains in phra-ngan (black magic) rituals, drinking a brew of cobra venom, opium, and human ash believed to grant pain immunity; Niran can reportedly take a machete strike to the forearm with only a shallow cut, a feat shown during a 2022 initiation witnessed by a smuggler, Chai Lek, 45. They practice lom-hai-jai (wind heart breathing), a technique to hold breath for 5 minutes while sprinting Niran once swam 1 kilometer underwater in the Mekong in 2021 to evade Lao border guards, per Chai’s account.
Their most fringe skill is saiyasat (spirit projection) members claim to “see” enemies through walls, a form of remote viewing honed through 10-hour trance states; a 2023 Thai police report notes a raid where the clan evaded capture despite a 2-mile perimeter, as if they knew the officers’ positions.
