In Restored Republic via a GCR: Update as of March 19, 2025, it reports “President Trump has just frozen the IRS for 90 days, launching a full-scale investigation into fraud and government waste while preparing to fire 45,000 agents. For decades, the IRS has been a weapon against the American people—now, that era is coming to an end.”
This is somewhat misleading. In reality, by Executive Order signed January 20th, Trump ordered an indefinite hiring freeze on the Internal Revenue Service. The freeze will remain in place until such time as the administration determines that it will be in the best interest of the country to start hiring again.
What we need to understand is that under Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act, the IRS was able to hire additional personnel, resulting in a far larger IRS staff than they had 4 years ago. As a result, taxpayers filing electronically expect to have their returns processed within 21 days and, if set up with direct deposit, have their refunds deposited within that time frame as well. It goes on to say “No new audits will take place during the freeze, and the administration is set to dismantle the weaponized tax system once and for all.”
Again, more misleading reporting. In reality, audits will continue, particularly on high wealth individuals as they have in the past, but the elimination of tax season temporary hiring will impact the speed and accuracy with which the audits occur. As an unintended, or perhaps intended, consequence, without intensive audits on these high wealth individuals there is significant potential for increased tax fraud and evasion.
In light of this information, I would once again urge caution and personal investigation before taking the reports as gospel.
