In a groundbreaking development for robotics, researchers have created a new type of material-like robot collective that can transform between rigid and fluid states. This innovation draws inspiration from the remarkable shape-changing abilities of embryonic development.
Led by Matthew Devlin from the University of California Santa Barbara, the team developed disk-shaped robots that resemble small hockey pucks. These robots can assemble themselves into various configurations, displaying the unique ability to be both strong and rigid while also flowing into new shapes when needed.
The technology mimics three biological processes observed in embryonic development: cell-to-cell adhesion (achieved through magnets around each robot’s perimeter), the forces cells apply to move around (implemented via eight motorized gears along each robot’s exterior), and biochemical signaling (simulated with light sensors and polarized filters that coordinate movement).
While currently limited to 20 relatively large units, simulations indicate the system could be scaled to thousands of miniaturized components. Such advancement could fundamentally change our concept of physical objects by creating materials that can adapt their shape and physical properties on demand.
