Date of WWII Japan’s Surrender was September 2, 1945.
Date of WWII Germany’s Surrender was May 8, 1945.
My father served in the US Navy during that war and several years after that war ended. His home of record was in Colesburg, KY, about ten miles south of the Fort Knox Gold Depository.
My parents met and were married during the war.
I was born about one year after the termination of that war on a naval station in Bainbridge, Maryland 1946, where my father served in the training center commissary.
I served in the US Navy Submarine Service during the Viet Nam Conflict, 1965-1969.
It was during my service in the Navy that my father, Paul DeVore, told me, he had remained in the Navy for some years past the war. He served as a guard in Navy uniform at the Fort Knox Gold Depository for some time. His job was to guard German Prisoners of war that had not yet been repatriated, while they removed crates and crates and crates of Gold from the Fort Knox Depository. They loaded them into railroad cars, day and night.

He didn’t know if there had been any gold left in the Fort Knox Depository, and he was not told where those train loads of Gold were being taken.
He worked with those prisoners long enough to obtain some small knowledge of their language.
The removal of that gold from Fort Knox must have happened between 1945 and 1949. Most likely from my personal memories of those days (I was about 2-3 yrs old) being in Louisville, Kentucky in a second floor apartment where people freely walked under the open window where I stood with my two older brothers, it was likely in the summer of 1949.
There may be errors but there are no intentional misrepresentations in this information.
