IN OBSERVANCE OF DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING’S BIRTHDAY…
MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. DAY (OFFICIALLY BIRTHDAY OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.,[1] AND OFTEN REFERRED TO SHORTHAND AS MLK DAY) IS A FEDERAL HOLIDAY IN THE UNITED STATES OBSERVED ON THE THIRD MONDAY OF JANUARY EACH YEAR. KING WAS THE CHIEF SPOKESPERSON FOR NONVIOLENT ACTIVISM IN THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT, WHICH PROTESTED RACIAL DISCRIMINATION IN FEDERAL AND STATE LAW AND CIVIL SOCIETY. THE MOVEMENT LED TO SEVERAL GROUNDBREAKING LEGISLATIVE REFORMS IN THE UNITED STATES.
I REMEMBER THIS WELL. I WAS IN THE 4TH GRADE IN THE LATE 60’S AND THE STUDENTS WERE TO WRITE ABOUT SOMEONE THEY ADMIRE OR LOOKED UP TOO. MY STORY WAS ABOUT DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING. I RECITED THE “I HAVE A DREAM SPEECH” IN FRONT OF THE CLASSROOM…
LATER ON IN LIFE, MY EARLY FIFTIES TO THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL IN WASHINGTON DC AND STOOD ON A CEMENT BLOCK THAT SAYS MLK WAS HERE…
MARTIN LUTHER KING’S HISTORIC “I HAVE A DREAM” SPEECH ON THE STEPS OF THE LINCOLN MEMORIAL DURING THE 1963 MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR JOBS AND FREEDOM, A DEFINING MOMENT OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.
