Florida Scammers Are Going Door to Door Posing as FEMA Workers to Collect Bank Info from Hurricane Milton Victims
Source: MSN | By Morgan Music
Officials have issued a warning about scammers reportedly traveling door-to-door in Florida, using fake FEMA badges in attempts to collect personal financial information.
Residents were urged not to provide their bank information to anyone claiming to be from FEMA, and to use FEMA’s official online system to share sensitive information when necessary.
“Don’t give out your bank account information to anyone who is knocking on your door,” Sandra Tapfumaneyi, Sarasota County Emergency Management Chief said. “That is not an indication that they are there to help you. Don’t give cash to anyone who says they are from FEMA.”
This warning comes in the wake of Hurricane Milton’s disastrous touchdown in Sarasota County only weeks after Hurricane Helene devasted the region.
Legitimate FEMA workers in North Carolina have already combated misinformation, forced to briefly pause Hurricane Helene recovery operations last week due to threats from militia groups.
Citizens with concerns about a FEMA worker’s validity are encouraged to contact local authorities.
