This is serious. There may be ways to get around this. But the timing is definitely of the essence to do this in a cohesive manner. Because you have to understand the emotional aspect because people are definitely in fight or flight mode right now.
They should Implement contraflow lane reversals on I-75 to increase northbound traffic capacity. This will involve temporarily converting southbound lanes to northbound lanes to facilitate the movement of evacuees from the danger zone.
They can also deploy traffic control points manned by National Guard units to manage flow and prevent bottlenecks. These points can also serve as communication hubs to provide real-time information to evacuees.
And they should use all available communication channels radio, social media, emergency alerts to provide regular updates on traffic conditions, fuel availability, and storm progression. Advise evacuees to maintain a steady speed and minimize stops to conserve fuel. Encourage carpooling to reduce the number of vehicles on the road.
Listen, it is going to be extremely critical doing this with an approaching storm. But I do not see any other way at this point. Because people due to this situation are going to try and return home because of the inability to get fuel or avoid running out of it to not be stuck.
ALERT – Hearing from a reliable source that Florida residents on the Gulf Coast who are evacuating to the North on I-75 are finding NO FUEL. Nearly all gas stations wiped out. Vehicles will soon be stalled on the interstate, blocking evacuations. Already bumper-to-bumper traffic…
