Condensed matter physics is ultimately just a side-show that does not produce reliable and useful energy from fusion reactions.
I designed the 3rd energy-gaining fusion reactor in history. My design was constructed and tested by the DoE at Sandia Labs in New Mexico in the 1980s and demonstrated a large net power gain.
I was interviewed in a video produced by DoE regarding the success of my fusion reactor design, which is based on E cross B drift confinement of charged particles.
This approach later became the charged particle confinement systems known as Penning traps and Paul traps. These charged particle traps were used by Hans Dehmelt to invalidate Heisenberg “Uncertainty” in a Nobel Prize winning set of experiments which kept an electron in the same location for months, invalidating “Uncertainty”.
I designed a superior method of invalidating “Uncertainty” based on the observed behaviors produced by photons in laser beams traveling along a pre-measured linear course.

The first energy-gaining fusion reactor was designed and constructed by Philo Farnsworth (inventor of the second type of television, which used Cathode Ray Tubes) during the 1950s using a fusion reactor design which was the same size as a grapefruit. His reactor was producing more than 10e 50 neutrons per second back in 1956 caused by fusion reactions in his electro-inertial fusion confinement system. (See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusor

The second successful fusion reactor, the Migma Cell, was designed and demonstrated in the 1980s by Bogdan Maglich, whom I had email discussions with in those days.

The fact of the matter of fusion reactors is that the fossil fuel industry does not allow them to be used to make power that does not require fossil fuel.
So the ITER fraud is a ridiculous waste of time and money and talent, which keeps the public mind off of the previous 3 successful and demonstrated fusion reactor designs, while keeping the profits of the fossil fuel industry intact.
Maybe one day one of the many fusion reactor designs that have already proven to produce magnificent quantities of electricity will be constructed and allowed to put the fossil fuel industries out of business.
