Trust? No! Believe? No! Expect? Yes!

I want to say something regarding our elected officials and the issues regarding trust and why it’s not something I personally look for in any elected politicians.

These individuals are not our friends, and thus, we are under no obligation to extend them our trust. They are expected to fulfill their duties, a requirement inherent in their positions, in order to meet the expectations of the public who placed them there. Trust is not a prerequisite for their performance; it is their professional responsibility.

Stop seeking personal trust in politicians who haven’t been vetted as thoroughly as those in your close circle. You trust your friends because you’ve shared experiences, visited their homes, met their families, and learned their behaviors, preferences, and vulnerabilities. This deep, personal knowledge is unnecessary for government employees to carry out their duties.

Maybe you trust your surgeon.
Maybe you trust your psychiatrist.
Maybe you trust your Yoga instructor.
Maybe you trust your personal therapist.

But when it comes to a government employee. You should expect them to live up to obligations written in the constitution.

We don’t need to forge personal relationships with politicians. Our relationship with them should be professional and based on their ability to meet their obligations. Their role is to serve the public and address our concerns effectively, not to earn our personal trust.

By understanding this distinction, we can hold our leaders accountable without the burden of misplaced trust. It is their compulsory duty to deliver results, not our obligation to trust them. This expectation ensures a functional democracy where leaders are evaluated on their performance, not on personal rapport.

Demanding trust from politicians can undermine accountability. Instead, we should focus on ensuring they perform their roles diligently and transparently. This approach fosters a healthier, more effective relationship between the public and their representatives, grounded in duty and responsibility rather than personal trust.

In essence, we must prioritize the professional obligations of our leaders over personal trust, demanding that they fulfill their roles with integrity and efficiency. This perspective empowers us to hold them accountable, ensuring they meet the high standards expected of public servants.

Moreover, placing trust in politicians based solely on personal feelings or superficial interactions distracts us from the essential task of critically evaluating their actions and policies. It is through rigorous scrutiny, public accountability, and steadfast demand for competence that we uphold the integrity of our democratic institutions. Our vigilance must never wane, and our expectations must never diminish, for it is our collective duty to ensure that those who hold power do so with the utmost responsibility and dedication to the public good.

Let us remember that trust in public officials is earned through consistent and transparent action, not through personal familiarity. It is their adherence to the principles of justice, equity, and public service that should guide our evaluation of their performance. By maintaining this standard, we reinforce the foundation of a robust and effective democracy, where trust is a byproduct of accountability and proven dedication to the welfare of the people.
