In an area in a Christian community in California where my son and I lived over 33 years we became homeless due to other people’s greed. Leaving a black mold infested decaying house barely alive we turned to a local church for assistance. I had only the clothes on my back and one change of clothing yet the church wanted me to wait until it was convenient for them. Reluctantly we were given access to the clothes closet as well as a few canned goods and rice.
We moved onto a local motel where we had to make a $160 deposit for our 2 small service dogs. When we left the room we cleaned and stripped the beds. Our dogs did no harm. When we asked for the “deposit” back we were told they don’t return the deposit in heavily accented English. The second motel didn’t want to honor the whole 2 weeks we reserved it for. After my insistence he agreed but told us not to come back. With it costing us nearly $1800, no ice machine and a filthy room no chance of that. The 3rd motel even though he owner wanted to rent us a room in his long term stay motel his manager told him no. Huh? We had to change rooms in that dirty motel twice in the 21 days we stayed there.
We sat at the side of the road across from the Walmart in that Christian community an old woman in her walker her adult son precariously sitting on the bumper of their worn van with a printed psychedelic yellow poster board asking for a room to rent. Of the many cars that passed only one slowed down to read the sign. After once again being ripped off by staff miscalculating what was owed we moved to the next motel in Sacramento.
The very small room was clean but assistance for the homeless was scant and we had to service our own room. Now we’re staying in a motel in my birthplace paying $72 tp $93 a night. After they finish slapping a coat of paint on the rooms and putting up cheap new lighting we have been told the rates will go up. No camping is allowed even on BLM land in this county. The site they had set up for homeless was taken down with the reason being given that they have 2 shelters, which are usually full.
The sheriff advised they regularly run the homeless from wherever they are found. With the warmer weather we see more homeless wandering the streets with all their possessions on their back or if they are fortunate in a cart or rolling ice chest. One young woman with her boycott dyed red hair had painted her face white circling her eyes in black with red lines squiggling. Even with her huge pack bending her over and a lame leg she kept up with the 4 or 5 others in her wandering group.
I wonder what her painted face signifies. Is she expressing her desire to not be recognized, or her sadness or anger or some other experience? Our van now in desperate need of repair and motel rates going up how much longer we’ll be able to keep paying for a motel room is in question. I am concerned whether my son will be able to cope with this homelessness and not knowing whether we will be able to afford this motel or any motel. He forgets what he’s doing and keeps telling me his brain isn’t working because he’s tired. We don’t qualify for any housing program and have been turned down for other housing due to insufficient income and any other reason they can create due to poor credit score thanks to covid.
Application after application it’s the same story. While we wait for the exchange wondering if ‘the powers that be’ have inflicted enough pain and told enough lies our anger builds. We wonder if the white hats are benevolent. Even with children having been rescued from DUMBS and reptilian removed will there really be prosperity and all human suffering done away with. And now more lies about the timing. in my humble opinion ( and others) just shut up about it and get it done. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
